What could possibly go wrong...
You are correct. Any pain medication can be ( and **is**) abused, a child shouldn't be denied a medication for pain simply because some may abuse it.
You may be right on that gun control dot connecting.
What are these stories of taking half, quarter, of a tablet, then panning it because of the experience that resulted?
That is going to let the core out, like crushing will. Fairer would be an account that followed “taking a single tablet.”
I was given some after having four wisdom teeth removed in a single session, 10 to be exact. I took them and they numbed the pain, but the only effect I noted was a brief fluttering of my eye lashes. I have never felt happy or high taking a pain pill. Maybe the difference is that when someone is in actual pain and takes the med's as prescribed it doesn't make you happy, but rather only dulls what is otherwise unbearable pain.
Being Scots-Irish and German-Dutch, I was very aware of the Irish drunks who couldn't handle alcohol. I am also aware that some people are also unable to handle any medications with getting happy or addicted.
I have taken various pain killers over the years, and never been addicted or happy about taking them. I always felt that they took the edge off pain, but didn't actually knock out the pain, but allowed me to otherwise work or handle routine activities during periods of necessity.
I can only wish they would give me something for pain to make me happy! Valium or Adderall might be nice, or maybe marinol but opioids and their chemical cousins just don't do much in that department.
I see no issue with this in an in-patient situation.
Most kids are treated for Cancer on an outpatient basis and the parents are expected to provide the bulk of the care.
Actually Oxy leads many people to use heroin because heroin is much cheaper than oxy.
How many drug addicts have you known? I worked with rehabs and took drug addicts to and from AA meetings for long periods of time. I have lived with drug addicts. Oxycontin is a drug of choice for many. It goes hand in hand with a lot of other drug use.
Nobody here is talking about denying meds to those in mind bending pain. But, approving meds for teens and preteens in various amounts of pain is insane. Have you ever seen children born from drug abusers? Have you seen the behavior? I have, and it isn't pretty.
They do it “for the children.”
Same as Percodan they gave me in 1979, yes they got me addicted, 3 months, All I could eat! there was really no choice though. Went through withdrawls in the hospital after surgery, really sucked.
This WILL NOT BE GOOD!

I took OxyContin longer term for a degenerative issue with my back. Stopped when it was fixed, never addicted. Again after a series of mouth surgeries to remove a tumor and reconstruct things. Stopped again, no addiction.
I had morphine in the hospital when I was 23, and would never want it again unless I was terminally ill because I understood immediately how and why it was addictive.
I was humbled -it deep glance into what it is to have a powerful addiction.

I agree. In fact, I think that oxy, is probably less harmful to the body than the massive amounts of acetaminophen with which it's often paired. My cousin committed suicide by taking Tylenol and blowing out her liver. I'm not calling to restrict Tylenol anymore than I am calling for gun control.
I know a few people who suffer from chronic debilitating pain. Oxycontin has allowed them some semblance of normalcy in what would otherwise be a life confined to bed by constant pain.
Since some people can’t control themselves, access to guns, errr..., I mean, oxycontin, MUST be strictly controlled.
I wish them well, but I can’t believe how dumb two posters must be to break a time release tablet. Don’t they understand that’s what the druggies do to get a buzz? Can’t they read the warning sticker on the bottle? SWALLOW WHOLE. DO NOT CHEW OR CRUSH. That’s not all that hard to comprehend, is it?
How come none of our resident Chicken Littles, always willing to give medical advice, spotted that giant boo-boo?
