Facing accusations that it cannot adequately protect the White House, the U.S. Secret Service plans to hire 1,100 more officers and agents for an agency besieged by embarrassing scandals and security lapses, two law enforcement sources with direct knowledge of the plans said.
The addition of 700 uniformed division officers and 400 agents over five years would expand its staff of 6,647 by nearly 17 percent, the biggest hiring increase in more than a decade at the 150-year-old agency whose job it is to protect the president, his family, and senior officials, along with fighting financial crime.
The Secret Service is trying to rebound from a leadership crisis and mend a culture of covering up mistakes that some trace back 12 years to when it was pulled out of the Treasury Department and absorbed into the sprawling new Department of Homeland Security, where it had to compete for turf and money.
The Secret Service confirmed it was "conducting an aggressive hiring initiative over the next few years" but declined to comment on the number of planned hires.

Odumbo getting scared or what?
They will take the current marginal leadership of the Secret Service and spread it among the 1,000-odd new players. More of the same.
they whom they protect are not worth their oaths and they do our nation and our people a disservice in the protecting of the undeserving
I just can’t imagine myself looking over him safety even for $ 5000 monthly and other benefits
I think there is a mission conflict there.
Humm, how about trying something different in the hiring practice. Raise the minimum qualifications and disregard the usual cultural diversity requirements and use merit and skill testing.
Zero tolerance for the simplest infraction, one strike and your out.
Hecky durn.
SS agents no longer need background checks.
Panthers and NOI members are my thought as to hirings. We only see White agents for public pictures.
No.
Please be all affirmative action hires. If it is good enough for aa hires to serve Americans it is good enough to protect our overlords.
Another government agency that has turned into a “jobs program,” instead of its original mission.

It doesn’t matter how many they hire. If someome is really determined and willing to sacrifice themselves anyone can be taken out.
Yeah that will fix stupid, hire 550 Affirmative Action and 550 illegal aliens.
Management problems aren't going to get fixed with new hires. That goes back to selection. Management selection seems to be a real problem in federal law enforcement. In my agency the problem is that the first level of promotion now requires going to headquarters for three years. You don't get your best and brightest there. You mostly get people that hate their current posting enough to suffer 3-4 years of long commutes and painful staff work. Those people go back to the field with little or no management experience and are put in charge of people.
Some of the crazy stuff they do after they are promoted really leaves you shaking your head.

Decimate our military but pump up secret service. Shows who matters.
That’s encouraging.
> Thats encouraging.
I had extensive training in executive protection protocols many moons ago. The element of surprise, planning, tools, and determination can eliminate even the most savvy targets. I’m not advocating it. Just stating a truth. Even his own security detail would tell you that.
Ask any former secret service agent when their problems started...after 911 when they came under control of Homeland “Security”.
