Carson should have been up-front about his past and how his feelings about abortion have changed, if this is true. If he sees a need for this tissue in research, he should've been up front about it.

Candidates are going to have to deal with it. The way this campaign is shaping up, there aren't going to be any kept secrets.

As well they should - we need people who walk the walk.
That being said, it's not hypocrisy to decry now something you benefitted from (or even outright supported) in the past. People change, they learn and grow. It's perfectly acceptable to say "I have changed my mind since then", and voters will respect that.
But when they refuse to comment, it really makes him look like a hypocrite. It makes him look like he has something to hide. Which is very frustrating. Who's running that campaign.
