A new poll suggests the bombastic billionaire property mogul Donald Trump is widening his lead over more traditional rivals for the Republican nomination with 24% support, double that of former Florida governor Jeb Bush.
For the party of Lincoln, this is a problem. Trump might be the candidate to beat in the primaries, but even many Republicans think he cannot win the White House. But when it comes to dealing with the threat Trump poses to its fortunes, the party has an even bigger problem it is all but powerless.

The Republican Party has been here before. Briefly, in 2011, Trump led Mitt Romney in the polls. But this time is different. After losing to the incumbent Democrat Barack Obama in 2012, the Republican Party made an effort to stamp out its bozo eruptions, to let Obamas support deflate naturally, to quietly preserve its own momentum, and put forth an electable candidate in 2016.
As the national party machine kept closer tabs on its candidates, it grew increasingly wary of rogues and demagogues, people like Sarah Palin and Michelle Bachmann who brought so much attention for so little benefit. Trumps popularity, despite comments seen as disparaging to Latinos and women, both key demographics, has blown that strategy out of the water. And the party is powerless to stop it. At least it seems that way.

You can only take people for granted for so long, and then they get tired of it. The GOP establishment has had sufficient warning, but ignored it, even laughed at it. They aren’t laughing now.
The unasked question remains: why would they want to?
Does anyone care about the Republican Party? I hate the Republican Party because it stands for its own survival more than what’s good for America. In doing so, it has become the Republocrat Party, Leftist and ugly.
I’m so glad someone like Trump has come along who couldn’t care less about the stupid Republocrat Party which has betrayed our country for thirty pieces of political silver.
I also credit Cruz and even Paul for standing apart from party politics. But Trump stands out in high definition contrast as the anti-politician, anti-Republocrat, anti-politically-correct candidate that cares only for America. Last one of those we had was Reagan who the Republocrats also didn’t like. Tells you a lot about the RepublocRAT Party.
Those of us who loathe and despise the politically correct Republocrat Party and want to see a free and strong America again love it not unlike how we loved seeing Reagan go against the conventional political wisdom of his day. They didn’t get Reagan and they don’t get Trump, but those of us who love America do.
There are plenty of democrats that support Trump. His detractors are generally the RINO open border types or the hard left socialists.
Trump/Cruz.
You mean the Republican Wing of the Uniparty?
Cruz is my choice at the moment. Trump makes things interesting, but I'm not sure that he is limited-government. I think he simply enjoys popular maverick status more, and being (or seeming) Right-leaning makes him the bigger outsider these days (in the eyes of the media, anyway).
“Good.”
Agree.
Nicely done
Who is "U.S. Republicans"? Sheldon Adelson? The Koch Brothers? Certainly not the average GOP voter. Do those still count?
“IMO Trump is probably the only GOP candidate who can win the general election. He will pull the indies and the disenchanted Democrats.”
I completely agree with you. I’m amazed that most people don’t see this.
Let me correct your correction: what the GOPe are most worried about, is the chance Trump DOES win the White House, and then turns around and holds the GOPe accountable for results.
The game the GOPe has been playing for a long time is "We pretend to be conservative while not blocking the Dem agenda significantly, and in return the Left agrees to ignore our being paid off by lobbyists and keeping mistresses on the staff payroll".
/noob post
We refuse to follow your convention, it is GOPe. :)
Just out of the picture, an army of Leftists with a few FReepes tossed in for flavor.
“I completely agree with you. Im amazed that most people dont see this.”
Most people are not as smart as we are. :-)
If the rest of field cannot overtake Trump, what genius would believe someone who cant beat him in the primaries could beat the Dem candidate?
