Columnist and former presidential candidate Pat Buchanan said that a significant slice of the Republican Party would take a walk on GOP presidential candidate Donald Trump and you could have a Goldwater situation, and questioned the general election viability of other candidates Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Ben Carson on Mondays Sean Hannity Show.
Buchanan was asked whether Trump should pledge not to run as a third-party candidate. He answered that while this is a political decision for Trump, it would be hard for the Republicans to win if he runs third-party. Buchanan added, I think it would be the right thing for him to do, to take that pledge, because I think it would enhance his strength inside the Republican Party. It would remove a problem a lot of Republicans have with him, and I think if he runs third-party, he is not going to win the election. Hes going to be blamed for electing Hillary Rodham Clinton. And having run third-party, Sean, and taken four states away from George Bush, if I were him, I would take the pledge.
Buchanan also stated that if he were advising Trump, he would have told him to get some substance in there before the debate. He specifically talked about Trumps plan to make Mexico pay for a border fence, and said Trump needed to explain his plan to do so.
Earlier, Buchanan said that Trump, Ted Cruz, Ben Carson, and Carly Fiorina are outsider candidates, and that theres a real disgust with the political establishment, a hostility to the political establishment, and I think the Republican Party does not want the establishment candidates who are being put on offer right now....

interesting the gopE’s tell Conservatives to vote for us even when we call you whackos and hobbits but when they lose primaries they vote Dem or stay home
Actually I was only 1 year old when that election happened, but still I love that joke.
Well, a significant number of Trump supporters will walk if the GOPe screws him out of the nomination.
Sure, if it's Jeb or Christie, I agree, I'd walk too. But there are still conservative options besides Trump.
I also know how to play poker so I am keeping my “Walk” option in reserve too. So, heres to you Pat Buchanan and the GOPe., It is fish or cut bait time and I am not going to be suckered by the establishment this time around and told to vote or else for the party’s ‘anointed lackey.
Later in the interview, after discussing ISIS policy, Buchanan stated that while a conservative can win and moderate candidates dont get the fire and the energy behind them, a significant slice of the Republican Party would take a walk on Donald Trump and you could have a Goldwater situation. And the same thing, to a lesser degree might happen with Ted Cruz.I've read that the only reason Ronald Reagan's nomination didn't turn into a "Goldwater situation" is because the Reagan campaign agreed to accept the Establishment candidate George Bush as his running mate. Along with many of the GOP insiders as support staff.
The Republican Party expects the base to fall in line for their chosen ones but have never returned the favor when the occasional conservative wins the nomination.
Hypocrites.
Trump is like a liberal, dumber, less articulate Pat Buchanan.
Significant number of GOPers will walk on Bush. Me included.
If Bush is the nominee, many in the GOP will stampede away from him.
If you havent seen it- Carville said the same thing
Yeah sure. Try telling that to the vets he has helped or the illegal aliens he is going after.
Trump could be Dracula in Drag and he would still be ahead because people are a lot smarter than you think.
She already has, long ago, and you nailed her foe what she was (and is) more than five years ago, boss:

I’ve always liked Pat Buchanan, and agree with him most of the time. I do think he’s underestimating the electability of Cruz and Carson, though.
Trump and Cruz are the only things that keep me even remotely interested in the GOP.
I disagree. For weeks I have said Trump is making a wake as wide as the one behind his yacht. He may hit a reef and go down. If so, Cruz is the next best choice for the LIV types supporting him.
Lots of folks tuned in for Trump and were very impressed with Cruz. Cruz hit homers off gotcha questions.
If Trump goes all the way and builds a wall, so be it. Stopping the invasion is job one. Nothing else matters if we have to learn Spanish.
But the blue bloods want us to hold our nose for Bush.
I cast my last RINO vote for Romney.
No Mas.
So true!!
The GOPe would rather let a communist Democrat win than "hold their own noses" and support a real conservative Republican candidate. Yet they have no compunction about foisting a candidate on the voters that no one wants and then haranguing conservative voters that they must hold their noses" and vote for their wimpy dishrag RINO creation. Or else, God forbid, a liberal Democrat will win. And nothing changes.
Fascinating to watch the ‘pundits’ on TV and read them on the interwebs. They are all GOPe with very few exceptions and cannot grasp how angry ‘their’ voters are with the establishment. There is deep seated anger (almost hatred) of the Boehner/McConnell leadership and their continual betrayal of Conservatives. How often must the GOPe lying be exposed before they realize that the jig is up.
Sure, if they win the primaries. I’m saying if Trump wins 35-40% of the votes and delegates, and nobody else has more than 10-15%, but they keep it from him. Say to Walker. Now I wouldn’t have any problem voting for Walker if he won the primaries, but in that situation, I would.
That means Cruz is no Trump when it comes to leadership.
An example; If, theoretically, Cruz inherited all of Trumps supporters, the last thing they would expect him to do during a debate, is to ASK permission to speak. They would expect him to just speak out, even if it was out-of-turn.
Cruz showed that he was unable to do such a simple thing.
They would begin abandoning him in droves.
