The city of Durango and La Plata County, Colorado, have declared a state of emergency after a federal cleanup crew accidentally released mine waste into the water.
An estimated 1 million gallons of waste water spilled out of an abandoned mine area in the southern part of the state last week, turning the Animas River orange and prompting the Environmental Protection Agency to tell locals to avoid it.
According to the EPA, the spill occurred when one of its teams was using heavy equipment to enter the Gold King Mine, a suspended mine near Durango. Instead of entering the mine and beginning the process of pumping and treating the contaminated water inside as planned, the team accidentally caused it to flow into the nearby Animas River.

LOL!
Flow out of whatever.
Brought to you by the same people that flushed ebola into the Dallas water treatment system.
We're from the govt, we're here to help you,........ DIE!
These are the same people bullying the Amish because they don’t like the way they fertilize their fields
Nothing will happen to any of them.
We knew the Obama crew were a bunch of well-poisoners, and this time they’ve done it quite literally.
Can I place a bet right now that no one will be punished any further than being “allowed to resign” - if that?
The EPA’s fine should the the termination of the agency.
That poster is likely a government-paid troll who is actively spinning the issue so as to blame the disaster on the modern mining industry.
Sounds like the EPA has a fail safe system going on there. In the respect that they have a buffer of laws to keep them doing their gest to destroy the environment.
It's been my contention for years that the EPA is responsible for much of the destruction of the environment.
Seems similar to the global warming "religionists" (it's definitely a belief system that requires "faith") tampering with the temperature measuring systems around the world (moving the dial a bit) to make it seem that the planet is doomed because of "climate change."
With that moniker, it seems like they want to have the same climate every day of forever.
Defund the EPA however it needs to be done, it ain't gonna be easy but it and many other government alphabet agencies are completely barred from existing via the Constitution.
Thanks for you well thought out comments.
I hadn't realized how strongly the EPA has protected ITSELF first and foremost, screw the environment!
I'm gonna go make myself a spotted owl omelet.
See this article for a history of the mining and this event.http://www.hcn.org/articles/when-our-river-turned-orange-animas-river-spill
The article is left leaning, but has a lot of good history.
One issue to keep clear is that there are two Cement Creeks in Colorado that are well known. One is this one that is one of the three tributaries to the Animas River above Durango. The other is a tributary to the East River which with the Taylor form the Gunnison — that one is below Crested Butte.
The Cement Creek at Silverton is the polluted area going into the Animas.
another good article

Taxpayers will pay. Big time. This is Superfund territory.
Durango is a tourist town. You go to Durango to ride the train and raft the river. I have done both. Won’t be rafting the Animus anytime soon.
Good reminder of Nixon....
“The fire melted steel; the floating rig lost boyancey and it sank.”
Didn’t the truthers say that was impossible?
Good job EPA!...Bunch of damned idiots!!!
My thoughts exactly!
Pick axe against a mine wall! Smart ever heard about a fiber optic scope. No thimb in the dike here!
I agree, completely.
