When other nations were afraid of ideas, this civilization thrived on them, and kept them alive. When censors threatened to wipe out knowledge from past civilizations, this civilization kept the knowledge alive, and passed it on to others.
While modern Western civilization shares many of these traits, the civilization I'm talking about was the Islamic world from the year 800 to 1600, which included the Ottoman Empire and the courts of Baghdad, Damascus and Cairo, and enlightened rulers like Suleiman the Magnificent.

Yes, they are all flawed - but some more than others. I’ll pass on Carly. However, she sounds like she would make an absolutely great Democrat. She just needs to become prochoice. After that, easy transition.
I've read various accounts about how learned and respectful of science was the Islamic world of one thousand years ago. If they were that big on science, where are all the scientific achievements coming out of the Islamic world?
They list some things with math and science from one thousand years ago but nothing since. Why not? Maybe they weren't as wonderful with math and science as a number of historians tell us they were.
They once were. Florina is correct.
If you want to dig things up in Egypt, it would not be unusual to have a 'guard' who ensures that you don't expose an antiquity that might be embarrassing to the ROP. History is what the ROP says it is.
Islamic Civilization
An Oxymoron
Correct.
It is not difficult to determine. Just follow history beginning with Muhhammad and the three Mecan Wars. From that point on it was about stealing from others and forcing others to become Muslims.
Now just fast forward to Islam today and ask what great leaps has Islamic nations make today? The damn rag heads wouldn't even know about oil or how to drill for oil if the Americans, Brits and Dutch didn't teach them. 95% of Muslims in the world live in abject poverty today. That is the height of Islamic civilization.
> Carly Fiorina: Islamic Civilization was Greatest in the World
Islam was not the greatest. Any greatness attributed to them was actually from their very educated Greek slaves.
I can almost go there except...
“Although we are often unaware of our indebtedness to this other civilization, its gifts are very much a part of our heritage. “
That seems to bring her praise into the present day arena and considering the timing of her speech, why would she do that?
The “Golden Age” of Islam was also when its religious tenets were relaxed the most. Caliphs blatantly ignored the prohibition of alcohol, the Quran was taken symbolically and twisted on pretzels to allow for such society to develop.
Notice how the jihadis never mention the Abbasid Caliphate as a model. They hate it, because they know how they often were Islamic in name only.
Many famous scholars were minorities, like Syriac Christians. A jihadi Caliphate would never allow such intellectual development.
I gotta disagree with you a bit here...when she says “Although we are often unaware of our indebtedness to this other civilization, its gifts are very much a part of our heritage. “
It sounds to me like she is saying civilization owes a debt to the Islamics of that time,,,and considering she made her remarks in September of 2001, AFTER 9/11,,I’m having a difficult time with it.
That’s why I requested assistance in vetting it.
I've never been to Iran, but I have friends in the US (US citizens, graduates of US universities) who were born in Iran. If you ask them “where are you from?” they will answer “Persia.” Probably because they want to harken back to that distant history in which Persian culture was relatively advanced, and arguably led the world in some areas.
I don't think this is a controversial remark to anyone who understands that era of history. My understanding of it comes from reading several of Bernard Lewis’ fine works and from extensive conversations with people who know the middle east well. Those who are from that area are proud of is continuity as a culture, its distant history. They are embarrassed by its history post 1979.
It’s obvious she is speaking of a long past time when Islamic society was, by the standards of that time, more enlightened than much of the rest of the world.
She’s in no way speaking of present day Islam and it’s disingenuous to imply otherwise.
Carly Fiorina is “permanently” off my list ... she knows nothing about the ignorant brutality of islam ...
The context is that there never was a great Islamic civilization.
From 800 to 1600, we had just fought the Battle of Tours, Spain and Portugal threw the Moors out after 700 years of oppressive rule, we had 300 years of Crusades in the Holy Land fought, we had the battle of Lepanto in 1571 and then the battle of Vienna in 1673.
What Carly said was not history, it was a fairy tale, in this Sept. 2001 speech. The death, destruction and enslavement of the Islamic hordes was unparallelled until World War 2.
And that the speech was made in Sept. 2001, makes it doubly worse.

Austin. That explains a lot.
Keeping Austin Weird.
Having lived in the ME, muslims were always the lower class society.
I wonder if those who supposedly gave to her after the debate want their money back?
“Context.
Im talking about was the Islamic world from the year 800 to 1600
Shes talking about 4001200 yrs ago. She is not talking about now. She knows the civilization back then is not the civilization we have today. . .and she calls muslime terrorists. . .muslime terrorists.
She knows who the threat is and is willing to call it by name.”
Thank you. Please don’t fall for this hit piece. She is starting to do well and out come the Lib hit pieces. On Fox News Sunday she hit it out of the park. She is intelligent, articulate and a Conservative. Don’t drink the Kool Aid from the Libs.
