WASHINGTON (AP) Heat-trapping pollution from U.S. power plants hit a 27-year low in April, the Department of Energy announced Wednesday.
A big factor was the long-term shift from coal to cleaner and cheaper natural gas, said Energy Department economist Allen McFarland. Outside experts also credit more renewable fuel use and energy efficiency.
Carbon dioxide from the burning of coal, oil and gas is the chief greenhouse gas responsible for man-made global warming.
"While good news for the environment, we certainly would not want to assume that this trend will continue and that we can simply relax," said John Reilly, co-director of MIT's Joint Program on the Science and Policy of Global Change.

and so do all the dead birds..
when the earth goes fallow..
and ice sheets cover the globe..
don't blame us fossil fuelers..
blame the volcanoes.
I reckun too much carbon pollutes some folks minds.. drives ‘em crazy.. never mind the chemicals they use to make solar panels.
Well, yeah, they shut down all the coal plants!................
Obviously, we must re-double our efforts, or face certain death.
It’s not CARBON, it’s CARBON DIOXIDE. Carbon dioxide is NOT a pollutant.
Notice how the MSM now exclusively uses the term “carbon pollution” instead of “carbon dioxide”. This is a scheme to make their readers automatically assume these carbon emissions are bad since “pollution” has a negative connotation.
I’m really disappointed that MIT is involved in this scam.
Moreover, anthropogenic CO2 has a negligible impact on climate.
could you comment on this story a little bit?
can gas replace coal fast enough to avoid brown outs in heavy use markets?
what about the gluts of coal that are occurring in various places b/c of the war on coal?
any/all commentary you could provide would be appreciated
Sure it is, SCOTUS says so, in 2007, in their ruling in Massachusetts v EPA.
SCOTUS told EPA to determine the risk/danger that CO2 posed to the nation, and if needed, EPA should regulate CO2 with the Clean Air Act.
EPA completed their endangerment findings in 2009. Obama would then delay until after Congress failed to enact Cap and Trade before he issued his first CO2 regs in 2010.
In general, I expect this not to cause brownouts. Natural Gas Electrical Power Plants have been a growing share of the market for years. It will continue.
Electricity from natural gas surpasses coal for first time, but just for one month

I think we will see more US mines shutdown.
Another coal giant files for bankruptcy>

Nothing but damned (in the correct and Biblical sense) government propaganda everywhere we look.

I.e., CO2, right?
This is scientific insanity, but it makes sense from a Marxist perspective.
The purpose of the environmental movement is the destruction of America and the promotion of Marxism.
Sigh...
What percentage of their gross $$ is from the fedgov (research grants and student loans)?
You gotta dance to the piper....
MIT-- home of Noam Chomsky. Used to be a reputable institution once upon a time.
And SCOTUS and the EPA are wrong. CO2 is no more a pollutant than oxygen or water are.
Obama would then delay until after Congress failed to enact Cap and Trade...
Not acting is a form of action. Congress never voted to regulate CO2, therefore Congress doesn't want it regulated. Just because they "failed" to enact carbon limits doesn't mean Obama should unilaterally do it.
