Republican presidential candidate Carly Fiorina said Monday that Congress should shut down the government if necessary to defund Planned Parenthood.
In an interview with conservative radio host Hugh Hewitt, the former Hewlett-Packard CEO agreed with a group of GOP senators, including fellow 2016 candidate Ted Cruz, that the abortion provider should lose its taxpayer funding.
"If it comes down to closing the government down or funding Planned Parenthood, what should the Republicans in the Congress do?" Hewitt asked the presidential hopeful.
"They should close the government down," Fiorina said flatly. "The point is this, however, we have a long way to go. And between now and then, beginning with this vote today, every single Republican out there, as well as I hope every media outlet, needs to ask the question that I have been asking for weeks: how does any Democrat justify the continued taxpayer funding of this organization?"
"And if you really think it's necessary, then why don't you support taxpayer funding for pregnancy centers right next door to every to every Planned Parenthood facility across this nation so that women really understand what their choices and their options are," Fiorina said.
"We have to hammer the Democrats on this because, honestly, their position, which most Americans do not understand that's the shame of it," Fiorina continued. "Most Americans don't understand that the Democrats' position is it's not a life until it leaves the hospital. Most Americans don't agree with that position. We have to educate the American people about how extreme the Democrats are."
Kentucky Sen. Rand Paul didn't go as far on CNN's "State of the Union." Paul told host Jake Tapper that while he supports legislation to defund the Planned Parenthood, he argued that the Congress shouldn't "start out" by threatening a shutdown.
With the first GOP debate set to take place Thursday, Fiorina is currently on the outside looking in. According to the latest RealClearPolitics polling average, Fiorina sits in 14th place and will likely take the stage an earlier candidate forum taking place at 5 p.m. Eastern, alongside Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal and former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum.
The main event featuring the top ten candidates in recent polling will start at 9 p.m. Eastern.
She’s good
When the outrageous Planned Parenthood videos started being released, fear was struck into the hearts of Democrats, Planned Parenthood officials, and the liberal media, because if the public was allowed to see them, it would be the end of Planned Parenthood.
So the media suppressed the videos.
If the Republican candidates want the public to be outraged enough to demand the defunding of Planned Parenthood, they will have to DESCRIBE the videos to the public, quoting word for word, at the debate on Thursday.
Just criticizing what Planned Parenthood has been doing will not be enough.
The last thing Carly Fiorina’s anti-Planned Parenthood statements, as quoted in this article, will do is strike fear into the Democrats, Planned Parenthood’s officials, and the liberal media, as the actual videos did.
To do so, Ms. Fiorina must DESCRIBE the videos so that everyone in the audience is to the greatest extent possible as disgusted and angry as if they were actually watching the videos themselves.
If she manages to do that, the media will attack her like a pack of wolves afterward, she will become the center of attention, and she will be able to keep quoting the videos and increasing the public’s disgust.
But will she, or will any of the other candidates at the debate do that? If not, the whole Planned Parenthood episode will be forgotten in a week, and worse, Planned Parenthood will go on to commit even greater
outrages knowing that all they will have to deal with if discovered are boring criticisms from boring Republicans that will accomplish nothing.
If they give out money to other candidates is it really Cruz's PAC?
Tough Love!
I couldn’t agree more.
Don’t say “government shutdown” in front of the GOPers. They’re already going through the Huggies like they’re going out of style. Obonzo and his race card scares the hell out of them.
I was very impressed with her as well. Up until now I haven’t paid any attention to her.
bttt
Watching that forum right now...saw her first set of answers...very good , very genuine.
DonTedCarly!
She has clear well though out answers for the toughest questions way better than some of the GOPe first stringers. There is a reason Carly and Trump are not on the same debate stage and it has nothing to do with fake polls.
As a female VP, I like her. She has more of a serious countenance about her, not unlike Lady Thatcher. I don’t dislike Palin, but I think she was lacking in something. Too much joke cracking, sarcasm, etc., like it was showtime or something. Carly is a more serious candidate IMHO.
