As penetration of social media plays an increasingly important role in presidential politics, I thought it might be useful to point out where the currently announced candidates stand with regard to Twitter followers.
Now some caveats here. Some politicians have been known to boost the number of their followers with bogus accounts. For instance, Shrillary Clinton is the biggest offender with over one third of her followers confirmed as bogus.
On the other hand, other candidates like Donald Trump and Bernie Sanders have the highest percentage of legitimate followers.
For these rankings, I have separated the candidates by political party and also included a column for the Twitter handles I am pulling the numbers from. That way, if I am not using the proper Twitter handle, please feel free to point that out to me and I will change it for future updates.
I plan to post updates on a regular basis and may expand this to include Facebook, but for now, I'm sticking with Twitter only.
First the Republicans
Now for the Democrats...

Great post! Thanks for the information.
Damn, I’ve got more followers than Jim Gilmore
There’s other Jim Gilmore’s with more followers than the Jim Gilmore running for president! I had to double check that one as I was sure I was pulling from the wrong handle.
Just doing what the conventional media won't!
Lots of politicians have multiple accounts.
@SenTedCruz 475K followers
@tedcruz 443K followers.
Hillary’s twitter ads get few retweets and likes (oops, star favorites).
There’s no enthusiasm for her among her followers.
I like numbers so here goes...
Total of the Twitter numbers provided
13,649,454
Republican percentage of them 60.7%
8,278,989
Democrat percentage of them 39.3%
5,370,465
Trump took 41.18% of the Republican numbers
3,409,127
Hillary took 73.7% of the Democrat numbers
3,958,846
Republican numbers Trump didn’t take (35.68% of all numbers)
4,869,862
Democrat numbers Hillary didn’t take (26.29% of all numbers)
1,411,619
These numbers reveal massive strength for Trump. In a field of 16, he has 41.18% of the Republican tweets.
Overall he has 4.87 million more numbers to draw from in his party when things tighten.
Hillary has 1.41 million more numbers to draw from in her party when things tighten.
If she got all other numbers in her group, she would have 5,370,465
If Trump did, he’d have 8,278,989
Nothing scientific, but still interesting.
Poor Jebra. That pretty new dress and nowhere to wear it after January 2017.
Trump had big numbers based on fame alone long before he ever said anything about politics
I saw that Ted Cruz had two accounts with large number of followers. I went with the @tedcruz one because that appears to be the one for his presidential campaign.
As weeks go on, it will be interesting to see where the trends are. Who's moving up in followers and who is moving down.
Those are not just President followers. I’ll bet 70%+ are from the TV shows.
I agree. I wonder how they break all this out.
It would be interesting to know if they broke them down so only the ones addressing politics were used.
BTW, 99% of the Tweets could have been negative too. LOL
Thank you. I agree it would be nice to watch the trends. I also wonder what the overall favorables are.
How did the numbers for Hillary break down. 99.99% anti and 0.01% pro. LOL
Don’t be surprised if they use your work.
I follow Trump on FB. Not uncommon for likes to be 80 plus by the time I get there
Followers increase daily
Perhaps but a month ago, Trump was only around 2.4 million. Also, those TV fans who don’t support his candidacy will eventually unfollow him.
