Cecil, a 13-year-old lion, wandered out of his sanctuary in a national park in Zimbabwe this month, following the scent of a potential snack.
At the other end of Cecils search was a lure, placed there by hunters who, conservationists say, wanted their prey to cross into unprotected territory so they could kill him.
Cecil, well known to those who visited the Hwange National Park in western Zimbabwe for his jet black mane, was beheaded, according to conservation officials. His corpse was left to rot in the sun.
Zimbabwean officials said that Dr. Walter J. Palmer, an American hunter known for killing big game with a bow and arrow, killed Cecil, and was being sought on poaching charges.
Johnny Rodrigues of the Zimbabwe Conservation Task Force said Cecil was lured out of a protected game preserve one night in early July by a hunting party that tied a dead animal to a car.
The first shot, which the authorities say came from Dr. Palmers crossbow, was not enough to kill the lion. Cecil was tracked for nearly two days before Dr. Palmer killed him with a gun. . .

I know. :-)
Ummm.... a lot of hunters nowadays use deer stands/blinds with fake deer, deer calls, urine, antler noise, etc. to attract the animal. For predators raw meat works, like what they used in this hunt.
I think the question here is did they intentionally lure this particular animal out or did it simply respond to the bait they had on open hunting grounds. The news media has already assumed they targeted this animal intentionally without showing proof of that.
No, I am saying that I don't care who you are, if you hunt, you are going to wound an animal now and then... It happens, and it is absurd to think otherwise. When it happens that your shot does *not* kill, it is a point of honor to hunt the creature down (again) and end it's suffering. It's the right thing to do. And he DID the right thing at great expense and risk to himself.
I think all y'all have no idea what you're talking about. None whatsoever. To add to the defaming of this man in one's ignorance, at the top pf one's voice, is unseemly. I would expect more from you particularly, miss mmarmelstein...
I have never pretended to know anything about hunting. I don’t hunt being a city girl & a suburban person - although Thumper has recently decided to live in my back yard and consume the contents of my apple tree. But your original post seemed to read that hunters were out there shooting willy nilly at animals without much regard to their suffering. In that, I’ve been corrected. Personally, I am sick of this story and despise the mob mentality that wants to kill or hurt this hunter.
I had gathered that from a longstanding interest in your comments.

Indeed, it is a matter of pride to cause the animal to fall in it's tracks. And it is fairly normal for the animal to bolt and run a short way before perishing... But missed shots do happen, as well as poor shots - there are too many variables to predict perfectly.
Personally, I am sick of this story and despise the mob mentality that wants to kill or hurt this hunter.
Thank you for that sentiment - and I wholeheartedly agree.
I guess, my FRiend, we agree in the end. Thank you for your insights into hunting. I have used them in my comments with the crazies on Facebook but it means nothing to them. All animals are superior to the worst of humans.
Bless you, dear FReeper friend!
Well, it's more fun than watching their legs get ripped off by hyenas and jackals.
So, a hyena, a jackal and a vulture walk into a bar, and sit down next to a lion....
Oh, it was MUCH worse than that.
Yep. Of course, what you suggest was a lot more common when the intended wasn't a white feller. But we can bring it back if you really want.
These two weren't. They ate pretty good too, finishing off African slaves taken by Arab slave traders and left for dead.
Depends on whether or not you fish with dynamite.
