Sparks flew at a rare Sunday session of the Senate as Republican veteran Sen. Orrin Hatch opened the session with a rebuke aimed squarely at an unrepentant Ted Cruz.
The Senate establishment closed ranks against the Texas Republican presidential hopeful for a Senate floor speech Friday that denounced Majority Leader Mitch McConnell as a liar.
The speech was out of line, said Hatch, the Senate’s president pro tempore.
“Squabbling and sanctimony may be tolerated in other venues and perhaps on the campaign trail, but they have no place among colleagues in the United States Senate,” he said.
Cruz did not waver, maintaining that McConnell lied about backroom dealing to revive the Export-Import Bank.
“Speaking the truth about actions is entirely consistent with civility, he said, defending himself on the Senate floor.
Two votes were taken on Sunday: one to squash a procedural vote to repeal Obamacare; the other to revive the now-expired federal Export-Import Bank.
Both votes were on amendments to a must-pass highway bill. A Senate ruling on Friday killed Cruzs attempt to offer an amendment to the highway bill to block President Obamas Iran deal. Another vote Sunday failed to overturn Fridays ruling.
Besides accusing McConnell of being a liar, Cruz on Friday accused McConnell of operating as a “team” with Minority Leader Sen. Harry Reid, a Nevada Democrat, The Hill reported.
Hatchs reading of Senate Rule 19 — which prohibits senators from accusing each other of behavior “unworthy” of the Senate — was meant as a warning to Cruz, but the Senate Conservative Fund, an outside political organization, believes it only proves Cruzs point.
.@OrrinHatch knows @McConnellPress lied about the secret #ExIm deal or he would make a real Rule 19 objection against @tedcruz

Watch video of Hatchs rebuke below.
I saw the Brit Hume segment and again with the talking head panel.
What tripe!
Cruz had it right—he responded to Hatch by saying that saying the truth IS decorum.
Hatch should have been retired years ago. He has done enough damage.
And I never heard him ONCE rail against Harry Reid for his abominable statements.
Greatest deliberative body in the world—in a pig’s eye.
We have traitors leading us, and Hatch worries about decorum.
Sort of like the Kevin Bacon character at the parade in “Animal House”.
Minus the humor.
I don't know what to do about it either. All I can say is that everyone needs to look to their own.
I sure hope you are right!
It’s people like Mitch McConnell that make me want to see caning returned to Congress.
I had never heard of it before you brought it up today.
It doesn't seem to have hurt Hatch any.
How the hell did I miss that?
That McCain is pure evil.
The Prison Sissies plot to shiv the Boss Man.
I agree.
I think Ted Cruz can handle it. ;o)
Rule 19 is the Emperors Have No Clothes Rule. It’s farcical and violates the 1st Amendment.
Exempts aren’t representatives, but masters. They have no place in a republic.
A funny thing happened on McConnell’s road to revenge. They forget mention that the house refused to take up the highway bill with the bank amendment.
McConnell’s devious act of revenge backfired. A clean bill might have gotten through. What an idiot.
Establishment windbags. No better than any dimocrat.
It is time that all reasonable Americans come to the conclusion that both Boner and McConnell have been co-opted by the Democrat Party and that they are no longer part of the Republican Party or patriotic Americans.
You must have missed the editorial Brit had last summer. He is all about Amnesty for the Rapist, murdering, stealing unamerican scum sneaking in across our Southern Border. Yes he is a Arbusto ass kisser.
Brit looks forward to his invites to all the political social events. Got to play by their rules.
I hope several Senators come forward to make Brit look like the RINO stooge he is. My bet is he has been told so by those that were there but not on the record for fear of retaliation by the RNC and the Post Turtle. This game of lies will eventually be exposed.
Cult like IMO. Needing control of others.
Exactly. Like manipulative cult leaders, they did not address the point. They just went after Cruz for showing them freedom of speech. This is what cults and gangs do to silence someone. Push them into outsider status and punish them.
Go ahead and prove that Cruz lied about McConnell, Hatch (you scumbag), and then bring your motion to have Cruz sanctioned. We’re waiting, Mr. Tough Guy.
this will of course backfire since all the people left and right want is someone, anyone, to take on the corrupt fetid cesspool on the Potomac.
I’m sure the matching censure of McConnell for actually doing the lying will be the next item on the agenda......[crickets].......
