For the GOP, Donald Trump may be evil incarnate — literally
The Week ^ | 07/25/2015 | James Poulos

What if a candidate for president were evil?

I'm not talking about the way "evil" is thrown around as an insult. I'm talking about real evil, the kind you find in the Bible. Chuckle if you must, but Donald Trump's opponents are beginning to make the case that he is truly evil. And the deeper you look, the more you see that it's no laughing matter.

The prevailing wisdom says Trump is riding high because the Republican base is raising a middle finger — once again — to the establishment. But the prevailing wisdom also says the base is dominated by Christian conservatives. That's a paradox in the making.

Certainly, just because you're Christian doesn't mean you're a wimp when it comes to politics. You can stand up and cheer, or grimly nod along, when someone — anyone — cuts through today's tightly scripted Beltway blather with random rants and oh-no-he-didn't jabs.

But it's becoming clear that Trump's candidacy asks Christians to go much further than that — down the road of perdition, if Trump's enemies are to be believed.

It all started when Trump went on record describing an attitude toward sin that would make the average churchgoer flinch. At the Family Leadership Summit in Ames, Iowa, Frank Luntz asked Trump to share with the audience whether he'd ever asked God for forgiveness.

"I don't think so," said Trump. “I think if I do something wrong, I think, I just try and make it right. I don't bring God into that picture. I don't."

He went on. "When I drink my little wine — which is about the only wine I drink — and have my little cracker, I guess that is a form of asking for forgiveness,

Bad judgment, bad manners, intemperate...attention-seeking, and unprepared by past experience for the highest level government job in the USA.

Perfect description of obama.

Agreed. He’d take revenge left and right.

How’s not a good time to invest in Macy’s.

A lot of people believe Obama has sensitive information and on everyone. Rather than blackmail people with it, I can imagine Trump humiliating opponents on it. (”Why are you guys listening to this loser? Don’t you know Obama was blackmailing him for joining meetgaymen.com”)

Trump is a real American. He takes no crap and if it is thrown at him he hits back. That is what scares the GOP the most. The truth!

I really do feel sick every time I see or hear Obama. I find him so repulsive. How people could have actually voted for this evil clown is beyond my reasoning ability.

The left is trying to sow seed of doubt among the Christian right. So transparent.

Not a single fact in that ridiculous article. Just a smear to try to pander to the Christian vote to hate Trump.

The only thing evil is the 15 seconds of my life I lost reading that nonsense.

The Week is a skinny little rag published by the New York Times. It has no credibility when attacking Republicans.

From the article.
It all started when Trump went on record describing an attitude toward sin that would make the average churchgoer flinch.

They even lie about how the question came about. It was because Trump mentioned the fact that Christians were being beheaded in the Middle East. VIDEO

Trup has got them all in knots that’s for sure. And must be good for us. :-)

At the Family Leadership Summit in Ames, Iowa, Frank Luntz asked Trump to share with the audience whether he'd ever asked God for forgiveness.

Did Puntz ask all the candidates that question? Haven't heard reports of how anyone else answered.

And trashing Trump seems to be the only issue Rick Perry has to offer this go round. Looking as silly as he did in 2012.

“unprepared by past experience for the highest level government job”

He as run large organizations but you are correct, he has no experience at lying to voters or sitting around and getting nothing done on the taxpayer’s dime. I think that may be his best qualification.

We started getting this in the mail for no reason. I let it go on a while and then called them up and stopped it. Very left leaning. They did stop it which was more than I expected.

I know. That’s the case he’ll have to make. He’ll have to convince people that he may be an amateur but so was the last guy. I’m for Cruz, so don’t get me wrong. I’m a conservative. I’m not a Trumpy, but I get their anger at where the US government has gone and gone wrong for so long.

Yes, and that's the comparison that's been made to the determinate of Trump. That is, that he'd bring some of the same flaws as Obama. Over promise and under deliver. Thin skin. Supporters nasty with anyone not on board.

Go Cruz.

"I don't think so," said Trump. “I think if I do something wrong, I think, I just try and make it right. I don't bring God into that picture. I don't."

How is that statement in any way evil? Is it better to just ask God to forgive your failings, or assume the moral duty to "try and make it right." Which course assumes responsibility, which abdicates one's own responsibility, rationalizing not making it right?

It is a very hard read, but in Johnathan Edwards--the great 18th Century Evangelist's treatise on Religious Affections, he deals at some length with the hypocrisy of those who keep repenting, yet manage to keep returning to the sinful behavior they have repeatedly repented (my paraphrase).

For a modern discussion of true evil? The Donald has been making some pretty strong points as to who has been wallowing in it; and it is not Donald. (The man is no saint; but he certainly is standing up for America, today. For that many of us are giving prayerful thanks.)

Anyone who subscribes to this logic is no friend of mine.

It's kindergarten level amusement.

What would they say of Churchill? He got it done in spite and as an affront to God?

Attacks on Trump are getting weaker and more obvious as premeditated, coordinated, organized, planned, planted and ordered from above rather than real opinion of the writers.

Fun to watch. I’m not sure that Trump will win any election, but he is certainly beating the pants off the media and ePubs.
