WASHINGTON -- After mounting pressure from Democrats, Senate Republicans removed a controversial Social Security provision from an unrelated bill to fund construction of the nation's highways.
Right before a key procedural vote on Wednesday night, proponents of the bill agreed to cut the Social Security offset in an effort to garner support from more Democrats, according to a Democratic leadership aide.
The provision would have saved an estimated $2.3 billion over 10 years by disallowing Social Security retirement, disability or supplemental income benefits to anyone with an outstanding felony warrant being actively pursued by law enforcement.

I don't care if it's as minor as a outstanding warrant - STOP GIVING THEM TAX MONEY!
If they are fugitives, don’t we check where the money goes and arrest them? Guess not.
spineless GOPe doing what they do best!!
Fugitives vote...for Rats.Just as felons would (do?) and just as illegals would (do?).
A cross check of the FBI Most Wanted List with SSI rolls could prove quite interesting.
Tell them to pick it up at their local jail... cell.
Great job, Mitch!
Why are these low brow delusional democrats objecting to not allowing anyone with a felony warrant to get benefits!
At least Dr.Richard Kimble worked a lot of jobs. Couldn’t resist The Fugitive reference.
We have prisoners that send letters to our credit union requesting that we give their money to their girlfriends to bring to them when the girlfriends visit. The prisoners still get SSI or SSD when they are in the pokey.
Cause the Democrats think they would loose their vote?
Gotta do it onna Friday an git outta town!!
What I want to know is why the Democrats had to be enticed by its removal to support the highway bill. Never mind answering, it was a rhetorical question of which I know the answer to.
It sounds to me like it would stop benefits as soon as the warrant is issued. Whether the recipient was fleeing or not, innocent or not.
3. Amend the Social Security Act to make certain revisions to provisions limiting payment of benefits to fugitive felons. Current law allows Social Security benefits to be paid to people with felony warrants. This provision extends the limitations to include those who are subjects of a felony arrest warrant and for whom the state has given notice that they intend to pursue the warrant. The provision also includes a safeguard that allows the Commissioner of Social Security to allow payments to such individuals for good cause. Offset estimate: $2.3 billion.

S.S. checks deposited electronically and can be withdrawn from just about any A.T.M. anywhere.

Because a felony warrant is not a conviction maybe.
So what is the process before a warrant is given, and how long does it take to get one after it is applied for? I would think that if anyone is going to go through the effort of getting a felony arrest warrant and for whom the state has given notice that they intend to pursue the warrant, they would have to spend a lot of time an d money.
Besides, they have a safeguard that allows the Commissioner of Social Security to allow payments to such individuals for good cause as en escape.
I know Massachusetts does this with all state retires with a pension.
Why did we even bother to “take over” the senate. It has done us no good. They vote like dims!!
