WINCHESTER, Va. –

The horrific murder of four Marines in Chattanooga showed the vulnerability of military recruitment centers. They are in public locations, and by law, they are “gun free zones” — meaning the military that are there are not allowed to carry their weapons.

As the country realized the Marines that were killed were unarmed at the recruiting center, people have started showing up to provide security.

At 8 a.m. Friday morning, one man decided to spend his day off standing guard outside of a military recruitment center in Winchester, Virginia.

He is not worried about another attack like Chattanooga here. But he is making a statement.

“People need to call their congressman, they need to call their senators and they need to change these laws that are on the books so these guys can protect themselves so a regular old citizen doesn’t have to go out and do it,” he told us.

The man asked to remain unidentified, but he said when he heard about the four Marines killed by a terrorist in Tennessee, he thought, “Here we go again.”

His act was thanked by numerous people, those of which gave him handshakes, lunches, and hugs. He says that this is something we will be facing more and more in the coming years if “policies” aren’t changed in Washington.

Its good to know there are others willing to put themselves in the line of fire.

This guy probably is risking being shot at not only by Jihadis but street thugs as well.

Here in CA he'd have to worry about being shot at by Jihadis, street thugs AND the police.

With the exception of a few governors across the US he is doing more than all our elected servants and military leaders.

I have doubts that arming Recruiters or reinforcing office windows are going to be adequate defenses against crazed killers with automatic weapons. Sadly, Armed Forces Recruiting Offices may have to all be relocated into Federal Buildings or Military bases where all who enter are screened for weapons.

When I heard about this last week, I had two thoughts. The first was that the gentleman who was doing something that neither the Commander in Chief nor the Governor of Virginia will do needed better operational awareness and to be less of an obvious target. Holding an AR-15 at the ready, even with a modern operational sling, gets way too tiring for a single individual for the length of time the recruiting station would be open. A better idea might be to introduce himself to the recruiters and then find an inconspicuous place to sit with a pistol while still being able to observe the area and its approaches. My second thought was to consider how I and a group of friends might be able to replicate his actions in our area.

Just a couple of thoughts....

We could also trust our troops and arm them as we should. This man should be commended for his courage but this is not really his duty.

The world turned upside down, when civilians are guarding and protecting the military.

World turned upside down. Says it all.

Did you know that “The World Turned Upside Down” was a song played by the British army as they surrendered at Yorktown?

That is true, this time. The fact remains, they are still soft targets and the only defense may be to house them in Federal Buildings or Military facilities.

Which defeats the idea of a ‘Recruiting Station’. Why retreat?

Absolutely concur with your first statement. Regarding the second - When I first raised my hand to support and defend the Constitution of the United States, I never thought of it in terms of having an expiration date. My retirement from the Navy eliminated the phrase about obeying the orders of all officers in positions about me, but not my personal commitment to the Constitution, the foundation of the peoples' contract with the government. In this case, my position is that publicly embarrassing the government into allowing recruiters and other military personnel to be armed is a form of honoring the Constitution.

(shrug) Just my two cents.
