The Russian navy plans to purchase a submarine-killer version of its Be-200 amphibious aircraft by 2020, an unnamed official said Sunday. President Vladimir Putin has made the modernization of Russias military aircraft a priority as part of a larger plan to revamp the armed forces by the end of the decade.
The Be-200 aircrafts anti-submarine version will help to replace the Russian navys existing fleet of Be-12 amphibious planes, a decades-old model that officials now consider obsolete, the source told Russian agency Sputnik International News. jet engines and sea water don’t mix.
crappy ruskie technology; this sea plane’s screen door won’t latch.
Always thought it a nice looking airplane. Sure has the wing for long range. Rolls-Royce engines.
Russia is notorious for announcing such projects, spending vast sums on them, but then rarely bringing them to completion as promised. And, even at that, this particular aircraft seems more likely to find foreign sales than Russian ones.
Hey, early Tom Clancy was interesting.
And where exactly will this hunt submarines? And operate on the surface, of an ocean?
Not practical unless it is the calmest of sea state, IMHO.
Doubt a submarine commander would select a torpedo unless it was all he had, and was forced for some reason to engage. A submerged launch anti aircraft missile would suffice. Modern units will target moving or stationary aircraft from the surface up.
How President Trump will arrive at a seaside meeting.
Anphibs can and are usefull particularly to small island nations like the Philipines for example which are spread out all over the place not only for transport but when properly equipted for defence as well. I’m surprized that US aircraft manufactuers haven’t gone into developing that line of craft.
They’re cheaper (airfield cost and maintainence) offer flexibility and require less personnel than patrol boats.
While it would well lose to an American Hunter-Killer, I would say it might have a better chance with a diesel electric boat with low tech weapons, belonging to, say, North Korea, Viet Nam or China.
