Republican presidential contenders Florida Senator Marco Rubio and former Texas Governor Rick Perry said Trump, with his latest bombast, had demonstrated he was not fit to be president.
At an Iowa candidate forum on Saturday, Trump dismissed Republican Senator John McCain’s reputation as a war hero, saying the navy pilot was merely taken captive after being shot down in Vietnam and “I like people who weren’t captured.”
“I will say what I want to say,” Trump said on Sunday, claiming a strong record of supporting veterans and accusing McCain of failing them in Washington.
“I will do far more for veterans than John McCain has done for many, many years, with all talk no action,” Trump said on ABC’s This Week. “He’s on television all the time, talking, talking. Nothing gets done.”

When a panelist characterized McCain as a “war hero,” the Post is accurate in reporting that Trump initially said McCain is “not a war hero.” But then, Trump immediately modified his statement saying– four times– that McCain is a war hero:
“He is a war hero.”
“He’s a war hero because he was captured.”
“He’s a war hero, because he was captured.”
“I believe, perhaps, he’s a war hero. But right now, he’s said some very bad things about a lot of people.”
Yes, but RR won his battles on a much different battlefield three decades ago.

Trump said "perhaps." As a Vietnam veteran myself, I have no problem calling a McCain a war hero who put his life on the line in the service of his country. Anyone who can do night qualifications on a carrier doesn't need anyone's stamp of approval. Many pilots were killed by SAMs and weren't "fortunate" to be able to parachute to safety. 5 years in a NV POW camp was not a picnic for anyone.
But that wasn't the point of Trump's remarks or what precipitated them. He was asked by the moderator why he called McCain a war hero a dummy. Trump then explained that McCain was at or near the bottom of his class at the Naval Academy. The moderator pressed Trump further saying how could he say this about a war hero. Trump was off to the races and he was particularly incensed that McCain called the supporters who came out to see him in AZ a bunch of "crazies." Trump took offense at the insult of decent people (presumably some were veterans). Trump even mentioned that he supported McCain in 2008.
