Franken 15 years ago: "I don't buy the war hero thing. Anybody can be captured."

No, he’s not a war hero. I really can’t stand him. I was responding to the Trump hooie more than than thinking about McLame at the time.
“So McCains political record and political name calling is immune from criticism forever?”
Of course not. But his status as a POW itself? That should be immune from criticism, yes.
Funny how anytime someone tries to criticize McCain, the cry of “ex POW” is raised. Kind of like how any criticism of Obama raise the issue of race.
McCain stopped being a hero when he chose to work with all his political power to leave his buddies behind. Those are the heroes who have never come home. And the POW and MIA community holds McCain as responsible as any American for that decision, to forget them and move on.
There is no immunity but there may be a political price to be paid for the way Donald Trump went about it. Time and the polls will tell whether more Republican primary voters agree with him or disagree with him
McCain is a sideshow and the issue will be overcome very soon by far more important topics of discussion
From what I am reading many many vets are just fine with the Donald saying what he thinks. With any luck he has widened the opening for the “ untouchable” McCain to be primaried out at the next opportunity

That’s certainly true. But, unlike most criticism of McCain (and most criticism of 0bama), Trump’s comment here was specifically about McCain’s POW status.

True. He never misses an opportunity to remind people. I give him basic respect for being a naval aviator (as they say, any landing you walk away from is a good landing, and for my money that goes double on carriers,) but then thousands of other young men were too, but they don't think that makes them presidential material or entitles them to anything. GHW Bush was one such in WWII-- got shot down in the Pacific. He didn't campaign on it however. As for being a PoW, McCain survived. Good for him.
