Boiled down, the preceding paragraph means that the Defense Department is not obligated to tell the public about prisoners believed alive in captivity and what efforts are being made to rescue them. It only has to notify the White House and the intelligence committees in the Senate and House. The committees are forbidden under law from releasing such information.

For example, the 1995 version required a unit commander to report to his theater commander within two days that a person was missing and describe what rescue and recovery efforts were underway. The McCain amendments allowed 10 days to pass before a report had to be made.

One of my heroes is my late brother. He joined the USAF as a young teenager. He flew on bombers which flew through the bomb mushroom clouds when they were tested. He was the last one of his group to die from that exposure.

That would qualify as heroic service. In what era did he make those flights, during the testing for the WWII bombs or later during some the testing during the '50s and '60s?

I had an older cousin who was aboard the USS Indianapolis when it was sunk in the Pacific after delivering one of the bombs dropped on Japan, and they spent several days in shark infested waters before being rescued. While he was still alive, I was too young to discuss it intelligently, if he would have discussed it.

Well, he was born in 1930/31 and was in Greenland on either his 15/16 birthday which was in the late 1940’s. Then years later he was at Carswell AFB in Ft. Worth. You have to remember I was just a toddler when he joined so this is from what I learned later. H loved flying. He had his own plane and was buried at the end of his runway on his farm. A funny story. A few years before his death, he was taking off, something happened to the plane, he crashed and landed upside down in a tree at the end of the runway. He was forced out in the late 50’s after he injured his back. Another story. My other brother was in the Army and stationed in Germany. BB was in N. Africa on a survival training mission. He took the train from Africa to Germany to meet our brother. My hometown paper had a write up about their meeting. I think it had been 4/5 years since they had seen each other. He said he had eaten just about everything on those missions. One thing they were never able to eat was porcupine. My younger sister and I use to write to both of them. I know they were very happy to get mail from their pesty little sisters.

Neither of my brothers liked to talk about their service days. I think BB flew on B29s, B36s, and B52s. I think I have those numbers right. BB use to talk to me about the UN when I was a know it all teenager. I think he was right.

Those planes are all bombers, the B29 was used during WWII and the B36 come on line after WWII. B52s produced in the early ‘50s and were used in Vietnam. Had to look some of that up. Those were some huge planes.

There was a good bit of nuclear testing done in the South Pacific in the ‘50s. He could have been involved in some of that. Probably also testing elsewhere.

I was really young back then but our brother told me recently that when they would come back to base the plane would be so hot that it took days to get rid of the radiation and that was just to a safer level. He said they would wash and wash the planes. Of course I knew as a kid that he flew on bombers but I had no idea the danger involved until much, much later. I really, really admire him and all the other airmen involved. They did their jobs without dishonoring this country afterwards. Oh, he was a Korean War veteran.
