Israel is also defensive fixed position duty. American forces are often forward deployed offensive.

Yes weapons trained and some tactical training to be able to organize on some level militarily if needed. Ages 16-30. And of course outdoor survival skills.

“Diana, you sound awesome...”

She is definitely one of our female FReeper goddesses! She has the perfect mix of sassy with sweet. :)

I’ve seen women mysteriously fall pregnant right before an underway period on multiple occasions.
Don’t understand the logic behind taking on 18+ years of a child to avoid a 6-month deployment.

“I see no clarion call from anyone (including General Dunwoody) advocating that women at 18 years of age be required to register for Selective Service.”

Equality?

On one hand, I’m proud of your enthusiasm and your service. On the other hand, I’m slightly annoyed that you’d even kid us about women being in combat units.

You have to know that combat is no place for social experiments.

Well, actually she picked the fight with an Army guy and ended up marrying a Marine. The Army guy taught her a 200 lb man could do things a 100 lb woman cannot. Her husband’s time in the Marines, including two tours in Iraq, house-to-house fighting, losing 60 lbs in the field, carrying well over 100 lbs of gear, shooting someone he could touch with his rifle, etc - that made her realize the difference between being ready to fight if needed and being in the infantry.

I was Air Force. Some jobs in the Air Force are fine for women. Some are not. But very few jobs in the USAF compare to infantry. My last combat tour was when I was 49. I weighed 160 lbs, could do 80 pushups, run 1.5 miles in 9 minutes even...and would have had ZERO business trying to be infantry.

America is largely clueless about what ground combat and attacking forces go thru. We have people who think doing pushups or running around a track qualifies you physically...but that doesn’t mean squat.

“My daughter could drop all these badasses from 300 yds no sweat (E-5 currently in WLC at Todd Cornell NCO Academy in Fort McCoy).”

I can shoot well enough to hit a man at 300 yards. But I deployed to Afghanistan at 49. I was a very fit 160 lbs for a 49 year old guy - and I would have had NO business in the Infantry. NONE.

“Keep the bar high; if women can get in, they are the elite who can serve this nation’s military.”

Passing a PT test has nothing to do with what it takes in the field. You pass a PT test one day. In the field, the stress is applied hour after hour, day after day. The few women who can pass the PT test are the elite of the women, but they won’t hold up under the daily stress of real field operations.

That is the problem. Civilians in America think it is a game. Just practice to do some push-ups, meet the MINIMUMs, and you’re ready. BUT YOU ARE NOT! Even meeting the maximums doesn’t mean you are ready for field operations.

You’re right, of course. I knew it somehow didn’t feel right. But quickness of composition is frequently at the expense of meaning, spelling, grammar, syntax....

My observation was that whenever there were unpleasant exercises or duty, certain women suddenly developed various “illnesses” or “conditions” that gave them an excuse not to participate. The officers (male) were afraid to lower the boom on these slackers.

Not all the women were slugs, but a certain group was just there for the easy ride, easy money and became “ill” whenever there was real work to be done. There were a few men in this category, too, but not nearly so many.

I think there could be a role for a very few women in special ops. VERY FEW.

Overall, putting women in a combat where physical strength is needed is not a good idea. Few women are psychologically suited to combat. In addition, most men would instinctively become protective of the women which would compromise their effectiveness.

On the plus side, it would be very demoralizing to most of our enemies to be taken out by a woman. On the minus side, it would be demoralizing for us as a country to see our young women coming back in body bags, missing limbs, psychologically damaged. Not good to see men like this, either, but especially traumatizing for a nation to see this happen to its women.

I really cannot disagree.

There are valid places in the military for women. Front line Infantry is not one of them.

My daughter is a Combat Medic.
