'Auschwitz Book-Keeper' Oskar Groening Sentenced to Four Years

A German court has convicted a 94-year-old former guard at the Nazi death camp at Auschwitz of being an accessory to the murder of at least 300,000 Jews.

Oskar Groening, known as the "book-keeper of Auschwitz", was sentenced to four years in prison.

He was responsible for counting the belongings confiscated from prisoners and had admitted "moral guilt".

His lawyers said he did not facilitate genocide, but prosecutors argued that he had helped the camp run smoothly.

Many observers have questioned whether Groening will ultimately be sent to jail, given his advanced age. He is expected to be one of the last Nazis to face a courtroom.

Defence lawyer Hans Holtermann was quoted as saying that he would review the verdict before deciding whether to appeal.

WW2 ended 70 years ago. This guy was 24 at the time, and was just a bookkeeper.

When is anybody going to go after participants in Communist or Islamist atrocities with equal vigor?

This is just wrong. I don’t see any kind of justice in punishing this man just because he worked at a camp. I mean if that’s enough to put a man in prison then why in hell is George Soros walking around a free man? Because Soros directly worked to murder people unlike this man.

It's easier to chase after 94 year old bookkeepers and feel self-righteous. Pensioners are less likely to behead you.

Meanwhile, the world bows down to Iran.

What bothers me is yes, he was simply a bookkeeper who did manage what to do with the stolen goods from the prisoners. Yet many, and I mean many, others who directly tortured and murdered have had their trials waived because “they were too old”, or “no longer a danger to society”. My favorite is “they have severe dementia”. Self-proclaimed dementia that is.....living into their mid to late 90’s in comfort while the only one that appears to have any remorse is punished. Imagine that?

Who cares?

An echo of the same question then, and across time.

God help me to care.

Groening bartered with the women inmates who were responsible for searching and sorting clothing and other possessions. He came into considerable gold and jewelry. All of this plunder had been declared to be the property of the Reich, so he was guilty of stealing from the Nazis.

Wait... so he’s being prosecuted for crimes he committed against the Third Reich?

And since when is a Nazi stealing from the Nazis a bad thing?

**but prosecutors argued that he had helped the camp run smoothly.**

Making things run smoothly is a German obsession.

He deserves prison time. The fact that he’s avoided it for 70 years does not change that fact. Better late than never. If he dies in prison, so be it.

I CARE.

These guys were willing participants who got away with MURDER. Hundreds, thousands and MILLIONS of murders.

Every one we bring to trial belies your “Who cares?” attitude and sends a message to the others: “We care. We will ALWAYS care and you will NOT escape justice.”

“who cares”

I care.
Everyone should care.
Echoes of this are happening again in the world; we all need to care.

Agree.

And the logic being used here means ALL people of Germany that did not take up arms against the Nazi's are guilty and should be imprisoned because, you know, by not fighting against the Nazi's they contributed to Germany running more smoothly.

You have no idea if he was a willing participant. He was a German in Poland, which means he was probably a soldier. Anyone seriously think he applied for a job in a death camp? He was sent there. He was in the army, in his early 20s, in a foreign country, in time of war.

But he’s a scapegoat, useful to our need for moral preening and self-congratulation, so he must be punished.
