The Midgets are under attack.
Freeburg High School, in the Metro East area of St. Louis, was approached last week by members of the Little People of America and asked to change their nickname. The athletic teams at Freeburg have been known as the Midgets since the 1930s.
The Little People were in the area for their convention in St. Louis and made a trip to Freeburg to let school officials that they were offended by the school's nickname.
The Little People of America posted a petition on change.org asking that Freeburg change its mascot.
"The term ‘midge' dehumanizes and objectifies people of short stature," the petition reads.
Gary Arnold, president of the Little People of America, told the Belleville News-Democrat that the nickname is "derogatory, objectifying and dehumanizing."
The folks in nearby Unionville, Mo., better be thankful that the group didn't hold its national convention in nearby Kirksville. Putnam County High School also is called the Midgets.
You'll also find Midgets in Dickinson, N.D., which in the mid 1990s was given the blessing of the Little People of America to keep the nickname.
The Little People of America must have changed their view on the midget mascot, and the people of Freeburg are in the cross hairs. Freeburg Superintendent Andrew Lehman said he will leave the issue up to the school board, which could address the issue this week at its monthly meeting.
"I appreciate their concern," Lehman told the News-Democrat. "I know the idea of something being offensive is a subjective concept. Things that are offensive to one group may not be offensive to other people."

According to those interviewed who were students during the 1934-35 school year, the name “Midgets” was given to the FCHS basketball team by a local newspaper sports writer. That year the basketball team had a small team with the tallest player at five feet ten inches tall. He was the center.
The size of the team did not seem to handicap the team since it felt that it could overcome the lack of height with “fast break” tactics. The major difficulty came during this season when the rules called for a center jump after each basket scored. A team which had a player much above six feet tall could control most center jumps and consequently have a considerable offensive advantage.
Not one of those short little punks is a midget. They’re all dwarfs.
Political Correctness is the disease the has infested America and is going to be the terminal disease that kills America. LIFE IS NOT FAIR, GET A HELMET fools.
And by the way, FAIR, is nothing more than a subset of political correctness. The only real place for that word is at the baseball game.

They are not people. I am kinda surprised that they still use the term midget for a mascot. Even the most miserable person sees this as wrong.
Why don’t they go after the exploitation and trafficking by the porn industry or some escort service rather than a yokel HS no one’s heard of?
