Why Pope Francis Is Keeping His Hammer-and-Sickle Crucifix
National Review ^ | 07/14/2015 | Dennis Prager

Posted on 07/14/2015 5:15:41 AM PDT by SeekAndFind

Last week the Marxist quasi-dictator of Bolivia, Evo Morales, presented Pope Francis with a gift — a carved wooden hammer-and-sickle cross on which the figure of Christ is crucified.

The Vatican announced that the pope had not been informed in advance about the gift. And some commentators said that photos of the pope and Morales show that the pope was actually offended. That was a false — probably wishful — interpretation. The pope himself later announced that he was keeping the hammer-and-sickle crucifix and taking it home, saying, “I understand this work. For me it wasn’t an offense.”

And “Vatican spokesman Federico Lombardi . . . said he personally wasn’t offended by Morales’ gift” (the Guardian).

The pope’s acceptance of Morales’s gift — along with his attacks on capitalism during his Latin American tour — further confirms one of the most troubling moral developments of our time: The Roman Catholic Church is currently led by a man whose social, political, and economic views have been shaped by leftism more than by any other religious or moral system.

It also reconfirms what is probably the single most important development one needs to understand in order to make sense of the contemporary world: The most dynamic religion of the past hundred years has been leftism, not Christianity, not Islam, not any other traditional religion. Indeed, regarding traditional religions, leftism has influenced them — particularly Christianity and Judaism — far more than they have influenced the Left. Mainstream Protestant Christianity, much of Catholicism (especially in Latin America, where Pope Francis lived his whole life before becoming pope), and most of non-Orthodox Judaism have become essentially liberal/Left movements with religious (and in the case of Judaism, ethnic) identity.

In terms of evil committed, what is the difference between the hammer and sickle and the swastika? Would the pope receive, let alone keep, a Fascist, racist, or Nazi sculpture with a crucified Christ on it? Of course not. Yet the hammer and sickle represents more human suffering than all of them combined. The number of people enslaved and murdered under the hammer and sickle dwarfs the number of people enslaved and murdered by any other doctrine in history.

To make things worse, Pope Francis received this gift from a man (Morales) wearing a picture of Che Guevara on his jacket. Is that, too, not worthy of condemnation by the Vatican? Che Guevara devoted his life to undermining human liberty, and to killing innocents in the name of Communism.

The only institutions that can resist the left-wing takeover of contemporary life are religious ones. When they fail, upon which institutions can we depend? What if, in a visit to an American museum, American artist Andres Serrano had presented Pope Francis with a gift — his work of art, Piss Christ — that features a crucifix in a jar of Serrano’s urine?

Would the pope have accepted it? Would he have brought it home?

There could not have been a gift that more accurately represents this pope’s value system than Christ crucified on a hammer and sickle. First, in a literal sense, that is exactly what Communists have done wherever they have assumed power — crucified Christ by working to violently destroy Christianity and murder Christians. Second, in a figurative sense, the gift represents the mélange of Christianity and Marxism, precisely what much of the Church — again, especially in Latin America, and especially in the person of this pope — stands for.

My heart breaks for the millions of Catholics who feel that their beloved Church is being led over a moral and religious cliff by a leftist pope and innumerable other leftists among cardinals, bishops, and parish priests.

Though I am not a Catholic, my heart breaks too. The only institutions that can resist the left-wing takeover of contemporary life are religious ones. When they fail, upon which institutions can we depend?

Tragically, we cannot turn to the contemporary Catholic Church. When the pope keeps a hammer-and-sickle crucifix; when the pope declares free-market capitalism, the one economic system that has lifted masses of people out of poverty, to be largely evil (“the dung of the devil”); when Cuba’s Cardinal Jaime Ortega declares that there are no political prisoners in Cuba; and when the pope issues an encyclical on global warming while the oldest Christian communities in the world are exterminated, it is clear that while one can still turn to individual Catholic priests and lay leaders for moral guidance, one cannot turn to the Church and its pope for moral guidance. On the contrary. One must fight back.

I said their writings were full of lies and deceptions.

No you didn’t; go back and check your thread postings. Y0u never mentioned ‘writings’...please don’t lie and be deceptive about lies and deception...

Such as your writings for example.

I have written one premise on this topic; that the SSPX practices the identical worship of the Catholic Church up until the mid 1960’s; what is untrue and deceptive about that premise...

Obviously you’re irritated because I illustrated the lack of logical thought in your position...your stipulation seems to be that identical worships is laudable for one entity and schismatic for another, nonsensical on its face value...

The Pope is a mortal man and he is not infallible. As I've said about Obama, he is NOT my pResident. And of Pope Frances I say, he is NOT my Pope. Blessed Pope John Paul II was MY Pope, a good man, a humble man who did good works and fought the Nazi's and commies during WWII. The Church has been infiltrated by the Left, it's true. I don't attend church services. I pray at home and receive Holy Communion at home on special holy days. The Catholic Church is in trouble and I pray they purge the commies from their leadership. In the meantime, parents can teach their children the Ten Commandments and their specific meaning as it pertains to everyday living, show them how to pray and make sure they say their prayers nightly, in short, adhere to the basic principles of what Christ has taught us. Do not give up hope and pray that the Church will one day return to the Church we once knew. Do not give up on God.

So you don’t listen to him. Period. An unjust law ceases to bind. What are they going to, force you to say the Novus Ordo at gunpoint?

We are in the mess we are in because we as laity became too passive in the defense of tradition. If gutting the liturgy were tried in an Eastern Orthodox country, they would have thrown the Patriarch out on his ear.

As far as Africa goes, I place my hope in the African Church, not African government—and the same goes for ours. At any rate, I have a hard time singling them out for barbarically driving around in jeeps and hacking people up with machetes while we are burning babies with saline in the womb and indoctrinating children into sodomy.

Blessed Pope John Paul II was a good man, a holy man, a smart, humble man who did good works, who fought against the Nazi’s and the Communists/Socialists. When he spoke, people knew they were in the presence of a special man. I keep a picture of Pope John Paul and pray to him that the Church will purge itself of the Communist stronghold. Don’t forget the power of prayer, and in particular group prayer. Say the Rosary often. Do not forsake God..pray to Him.

Since you were asked for a specific link to back up your assertion, you can go ahead and post it here without *making it personal*. You are simply providing the requested information.

I’ve learned in the past to not read FReepmails from you.

Good Points! This too, shall pass. Maybe we won’t be living here on earth, but it will pass. The Church will still be here.

BTW, I miss JPII as well. He became Pope when I was 14. When someone says Pope, he’s the visual I get. Can’t help it.

I agree with maybe 50% of that.....I certainly concur that the PCA and the PC USA are totally different.

But I also think there will be a lot of people called out of “organized churches” - that doesn’t mean they’ll be lone wolves necessarily.

The Reformation Movement that gave birth to all other Christian denominations was lead and supported by Catholics breaking away from a intolerably corrupted Catholic Church.

As for not solving anything: The billions over the centuries since, who followed Protestantism would adamantly disagree with you.

This is ironic since one of the people you pinged labels herself as a “proud member of the Democrat party.

OK caught ...apparently Verga does "investigations" of the posters on FR to find out the "dirt" on them ....unfortunately the only thing he can find out on me is I am a registered democrat ... no porn pictures or police record.. .

I have been a registered democrat for over 50 years.. the party my dad was active in .. I am not ashamed of that ..

The first presidential election I voted in I voted for Goldwater ... never voted for Kennedy ( a shirt tail relative of my husband)...( did ya find that out too Verga ??)

I have never changed parties to reflect my voting record.. this allows me to vote for the most conservative one running in my 85% RC liberal democrat area ..

But I have to say this...if I was a Republican I would hang my head because of their week kneed leadership

Party affiliation is only useful for voting in the primaries.

It means nothing in the general election.

The only time I vote my party affiliation is in the primaries.

During the general election, I vote as conservative as I can.

IOW, the *dirt* means nothing.

Then by extension nothing said on the forum means anything, because anyone can say anything they like. Such as saying that have never voted for a democrat or that they voted for Goldwater.

BTW I didn't "dig it up", it was given to me by another freeper.

BTW this is also the pat where a mature Christian would admit that I was correct.

defconw, no need to apologize for someone you support. I'm 73, and I've seen many Popes come and go. It is the first time in my life that I recognized a great man when Pope John Paul became Pope. If you haven't read anything about his life, I truly urge you to do so. Pope John Paul was one of a kind. I pray to him daily to help us in our need, as these are dark times for us all and our country, and for religion and the love of God.

That's how I feel as well. I'll fight communism/socialism/marxism/jihad muslims til my last breath. I may not be around to see this evil stamped out in the USA and in the Catholic Church, but I pray that both will prevail.

Don’t tell me what or how to think. Catholics can and do receive Holy Communion from “bad men.” These “bad men” still are able to transform bread and wine into the body and blood of Jesus Christ. That’s basic Catholic theology.

Here. From the Bible that Catholics claim their church is responsible for. *Bad men* have no place in the ministry.

Why doesn't the church follow it?

Qualifications for elder and deacon.

1 Corinthians 5:1-13 It is actually reported that there is sexual immorality among you, and of a kind that is not tolerated even among pagans, for a man has his father's wife. And you are arrogant! Ought you not rather to mourn? Let him who has done this be removed from among you.

For though absent in body, I am present in spirit; and as if present, I have already pronounced judgment on the one who did such a thing. When you are assembled in the name of the Lord Jesus and my spirit is present, with the power of our Lord Jesus, you are to deliver this man to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, so that his spirit may be saved in the day of the Lord.

Your boasting is not good. Do you not know that a little leaven leavens the whole lump? Cleanse out the old leaven that you may be a new lump, as you really are unleavened. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. Let us therefore celebrate the festival, not with the old leaven, the leaven of malice and evil, but with the unleavened bread of sincerity and truth.

I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people— not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world. But now I am writing to you not to associate with anyone who bears the name of brother if he is guilty of sexual immorality or greed, or is an idolater, reviler, drunkard, or swindler—not even to eat with such a one. For what have I to do with judging outsiders? Is it not those inside the church whom you are to judge? God judges those outside. “Purge the evil person from among you.”

That precludes taking communion with someone like that.

2 John 1:4-11 I rejoiced greatly to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as we were commanded by the Father. And now I ask you, dear lady—not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but the one we have had from the beginning—that we love one another. And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, so that you should walk in it. For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. Such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist. Watch yourselves, so that you may not lose what we have worked for, but may win a full reward. Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son. If anyone comes to you and does not bring this teaching, do not receive him into your house or give him any greeting, for whoever greets him takes part in his wicked works.

Titus 1:5-16 This is why I left you in Crete, so that you might put what remained into order, and appoint elders in every town as I directed you— if anyone is above reproach, the husband of one wife, and his children are believers and not open to the charge of debauchery or insubordination. For an overseer, as God's steward, must be above reproach. He must not be arrogant or quick-tempered or a drunkard or violent or greedy for gain, but hospitable, a lover of good, self-controlled, upright, holy, and disciplined. He must hold firm to the trustworthy word as taught, so that he may be able to give instruction in sound doctrine and also to rebuke those who contradict it.

For there are many who are insubordinate, empty talkers and deceivers, especially those of the circumcision party. They must be silenced, since they are upsetting whole families by teaching for shameful gain what they ought not to teach. One of the Cretans, a prophet of their own, said, “Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.” This testimony is true. Therefore rebuke them sharply, that they may be sound in the faith, not devoting themselves to Jewish myths and the commands of people who turn away from the truth. To the pure, all things are pure, but to the defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure; but both their minds and their consciences are defiled. They profess to know God, but they deny him by their works. They are detestable, disobedient, unfit for any good work.

1 Timothy 3:1-13 The saying is trustworthy: If anyone aspires to the office of overseer, he desires a noble task. Therefore an overseer must be above reproach, the husband of one wife, sober-minded, self-controlled, respectable, hospitable, able to teach, not a drunkard, not violent but gentle, not quarrelsome, not a lover of money. He must manage his own household well, with all dignity keeping his children submissive, for if someone does not know how to manage his own household, how will he care for God's church? He must not be a recent convert, or he may become puffed up with conceit and fall into the condemnation of the devil. Moreover, he must be well thought of by outsiders, so that he may not fall into disgrace, into a snare of the devil.

Deacons likewise must be dignified, not double-tongued, not addicted to much wine, not greedy for dishonest gain. They must hold the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience. And let them also be tested first; then let them serve as deacons if they prove themselves blameless. Their wives likewise must be dignified, not slanderers, but sober-minded, faithful in all things. Let deacons each be the husband of one wife, managing their children and their own households well. For those who serve well as deacons gain a good standing for themselves and also great confidence in the faith that is in Christ Jesus.

Galatians 5:19-24 Now the works of the flesh are evident: sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, idolatry, sorcery, enmity, strife, jealousy, fits of anger, rivalries, dissensions, divisions, envy, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these. I warn you, as I warned you before, that those who do such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control; against such things there is no law. And those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.

Sexual Immorality Defiles the Church

I wrote to you in my letter not to associate with sexually immoral people—not at all meaning the sexually immoral of this world, or the greedy and swindlers, or idolaters, since then you would need to go out of the world.
