New York City reached a settlement on Monday with the family of Eric Garner, agreeing to pay $5.9 million to resolve the claim over his killing by the police last July on Staten Island, according to a lawyer representing the family.
The agreement, reached days before the deadline to file suit in the death, appeared to be among the biggest reached so far as part of a strategy by the city comptroller, Scott C. Stringer, to settle major civil rights claims even before a lawsuit is filed. Mr. Stringer has said the aim is to save taxpayers the expense of a drawn-out trial and to give those bringing the suits and their families a measure of closure.

"So its the cops fault and the city has to pay $6 Large to the family. "
Wonder how long it will take them to go through that. They'll probably be back on welfare by the end of the year.

They are going to have to get all the police out there on overtime shaking down potential tax felons selling “selling single untaxed cigarettes” to make up the $5 million plus the city just got shook down for.

Providing Obama with a big racial issue is lucrative, no matter if you’re an at fault criminal.

There was a funeral parlour on the corner of the street I lived on. We knew everybody on the street, so whenever anyone died, my mother paid her respects at the funeral home. Because I was the youngest in the family, she’d always drag me along. I saw a lot of dead people when I was a kid. It didn’t bother me much then, but as I got older, I started feeling like you. When a long-time friend and co-worker passed in a parachute jump, I couldn’t bring myself to attend his funeral. I wanted to remember him as he was the last time I’d seen him. My parents and all my siblings are gone. It’s just me and my two sons left. I believe I’ve seen enough dead people to last the rest of my lifetime.

You summed it up nicely.
I for one am deliriously happy that NYC has to ‘cough” out $6 million as a result of its idiotic taxing of single cigs.
I’d like to know how much in taxes has gone in the NYC ‘coffers’ as a result of its high cigarette taxes which just created the black market that killed Garner.

that’s O.K., with the tax rate in N.Y., the family will get about $6.95.

This is a white guilt, liberal surrender settlement.
It's a close cousin to all the "consent decrees" that various levels of government enter into not really to avoid costly suits but rather to achieve results while circumventing legislative and other inconvenient governing processes.
I'd be more than happy to see NYC and other Progressive bastions go this route, except for the fact that they'll be used as precedents for suits/settlements in not-so-Progressive bastions.
To: GIdget2004
well, the attorney's will get their cut, and ....
The relatives of Mr. Garner, along with Mr. Moore, are expected to discuss the settlement at a news conference scheduled for Tuesday morning at the Harlem offices of the National Action Network, led by the Rev. Al Sharpton.
The Rev. Al wil get his cut and....
the Garner family will go to DisneyLand.

So, that lifelong criminal Eric Garner was worth far more DEAD than alive. He never held a regular job, was a career petty criminal, and now the taxpayers have to pony up $5.9 mil for these ghetto animals. I read that dear “Esaw” is only a common law wife at that, and that Garner had a much younger piece on the side who has a child by him.

I do not believe nor support the idea that police are ordered or encouraged to arrest people for selling untaxed cigarettes. I would say that you are naive. The government was losing revenue and governments don't like to lose revenue so the police were ordered to put a stop to it.
This is also why I say that Bratton is actually worse than DeBlasio.
