Jonah Goldberg: Trump Fans, It's Time for an Intervention
National Review Online ^ | 7-11-2015 | Jonah Goldberg (or…)

Isnip)......I truly, honestly, and with all my heart and mind think Donald Trump’s most ardent supporters are making a yuuuuuuge mistake. I think they are being conned and played. I feel like a guy whose brother is being taken advantage of by a grifter. I’m watching helplessly as the con artist congratulates him for taking out a third mortgage......(snip)

All I know is that I will never EVER vote for Trump.

His fans can claim whatever principle he stands for, I can stand clearly on mine.

I”m not pimping Goldberg. I merely said he had some valid points, and he DOES.It speaks volumes that you would think I was pimping Goldberg.

I could care less if he’s been less than valid in the past, or future. I could care less that NRO is surging left, though it its. The ideas in this article, at least some of them, are VALID.

Yes I do write for Breitbart, American Thinker, and many other outlets. I also read. I’d hate to see what I’d write if it weren’t for my reading.

You obviously are too important to actually read what I said. My point was that you flogged that article all weekend. I read it in full the first time you put it up, and checked for additional info thereafter. I also replied to it Saturday, expressing no negativity to you, but rather my low regard for Jonah’s snotty offering.

He occasionally shows up in the panel on FNC with Brett Baer, and each time he’s a little more disappointing. Almost as though he were competing with Juan Williams.

I have a hunch that if Jonah’s article hadn’t been criticle of Trump you wouldn’t have given it a second look.

He should be praising Trump for going against the political Rino machine.

Actually, he gives him credit for that, not exactly, but does give him credit. He then points out that Trump's adult life has been spent far to the left of most RINOs. In fact, you are shamed by your own words. Goldberg's entire attack on Trump is from the RIGHT, not from the RINO LEFT.

And you cannot refute a syllable of that.

I agree that part of Goldberg’s commentary was unnecessarily snarky.

But at the same time he espoused a preference for market based methods to accomplish that.

I'm not doubting he said that, but he's referenced Canada's system directly and specifically as a model. That's hardly market based.

Do you think I give two ***ts what you think of my posts? And why do you presume I'm a trump supporter?

I am in one sense - he has captured the attention and focus of SO many in a way no one else has been able to do. Moreover, he is upsetting the establishment. That, in and of itself, is worth his candidacy and refutes a key point that Goldberg has been trumpeting. As far as a "personal attack" on Jonah - it is no secret that Jonah has a "personal" issue with Trump so me thinks thou doth protest too much.

IF you read the Loesch quote, you would also realize that refuting the Jonah article is moot. NOW, Jonah is throwing up the cautions about a potentially moderate candidate when he CLEARLY didn't give a damn about Romney, McCain, Dole, Bush or Bush. So before "refuting" his points, I question his motive! You really think Jonah and NRO is now the purveyor of truth as it relates to vetting "Conservatives"?

IF so, where the hell have they been for the last 15 years? hell, where have they been for the last 8 months???

They, like the rest of the chattering-"hold your nose and vote"-"we know better" crowd are now all up in arms over Trump.

They are attempting to use Trump's political stances of the past to deny him the opportunity to upset the process. They ARE MISSING THE POINT!

AS to refuting the specifics in this article - well let's play your stupid f-ing game "C. Edmund Wright" - purveyor of all things right and decent and judge of all other things which might offend you -

The first 13 paragraphs are Jonah attacking trump on nothing of substance but indeed, firing back because the Donald dare go after Jonah.

Jonah then brings up Trump's use of his wealth. Jonah fails to point out the initial use, in the political arena Trump, where started to talk about his personal wealth was to illustrate that he could not be bought by special interests. Go ahead, look it up.

I'll even provide the link: http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-politics/wp/2015/06/16/full-text-donald-trump-announces-a-presidential-bid/ - a little more than half way down the page.

So Jonah's butthurt about Trump talking about his money. Refuted.

Immigration - Trump has said he's in support of a path to citizenship. Yep. So have most other candidates AND it continues to be debated by many "conservatives" on the right way to solve the problem - which is two or three fold. So yes, Trump supports a path. He also supports a REAL border AND he supports penalizing Mexico. Sounds pretty conservative to me.

Abortion - he was pro-choice and now he's pro-life. Romney was the same. Oh Jonah, where were you then?? That's right "proudly voting for him."

He praised Hillary and he also praised Obama. He supported Hillary's 2007 socialized medicine plan. But, Jonah, you "proudly voted for" the guy who actually implemented this before Hillary - Mitt Romney.

At least Trump learned his mistakes and realizes what a disaster Obama and Obamacare have been. or was that not the point Jonah?

Now Jonah goes after Trump for his economics. This is where Jonah REALLY exposes the fact he has never had to work a day in his life but lives in the bubble of "think tanks" and DC-insidership. In the business world, you take advantage of the cards you are dealt. I don't fault Trump, in the least, for leveraging lobbyists and emminent domain to grow his empire. He played the cards that were dealt by the very politicians Jonah infers are better than the guy doing the deal.

It's crystal clear Jonah doesn't actually know the business world at all. At least Trump doesn't try to lie or hide or obfuscate his business dealings. It's why businessmen are more "transparent" than politicians and political analysts - because their results can be measured. Jonah is mouth piece who has never had to worry about being right. He doesn't need to be. If you're wrong in business, you suffer the very real aspects of losing money.

That's about the only points to "refute" in the article. The rest is Jonah...being Jonah.

You are clearly an angry and misguided little person. You have such a hatred for Jonah that to you, this is about him.

Might I remind you that it’s small minds who obsess on personality, average minds on issues, and great minds on ideas. You are focused on Jonah. I am focused on a few of the ideas in this article. I think that about sums up our relative mental capacities, don’t you??

I probably have read and forgotten more than you.

I have have had with the beltway pundits and the out of touch politicians.

Look around this country is probably past the point of no return in the current makeup.

Several years ago a Russian Economist predicted this country would default and it would break up into different sections. At first blush I thought it unlikely, now I am not so sure. With the next seven years the Math may finally get us so I guess we will see.

epic fail.

And yes, I’d say the article was overly snotty in spots.

Goldberg is mostly correctly.

But what he fails to see is that the popularity of Trump despite all the negatives he notes is that sign of how desperate and hungry the base is for someone, anyone, to stand strong.

Trump popularity did not skyrocket because he attacked illegal immigration, it skyrocketed because he attacked illegal immigration, got excoriated for it in the media and some losing some PC business contracts, and instead of pulling the typical spineless milquetoast Republican move of immediately retraction and apologizing for being alive, he actually defiantly continued to pound the same message even louder. That’s when the base warmed to him.
Because the base is desperate for someone who has some fight in him.

Clearly you have forgotten every single thing you've read - proof is that you wrote that above, none of which I disagree with. But if you think Trump's the answer to that.....because he's been left of the beltway politicians for almost all of his life, then you are being played for a sucker.

Actually he does see that, in fact, it's how he explains his popularity. He's a bit snotty about it, but he is not blinded to that dynamic at all.

You are not focused on the "few ideas" in this article in the least. You started off the whole thread by challenging and castigating any "Trump supporters" to refute Jonah.

I think Jonah's constant pounding on Trump and the National Review's focus on taking down Trump is questionable at best. And that makes Jonah no different than the same liberal media shilling for Hillary.

Quit picking sides and let the best candidate win. Quit treating people like we're stupid and need to be told what to think!

I think your mental capacities...are limited.

I never said he was the answer. What I said is that is he bringing up the Hot Button Issues like Illegal Immigration that need to be in the Political Discourse.

Given some of the sorry candidates we have had in the past he certainly isn’t any worse. At this point I have just about had it with any Establishment Professional Politicians, on either side if the aisle.

I will wait and watch the August 6th Debates and will hoping for Fireworks. By the way I kind of like Carly too and hope she is the first tier.

So if he does see it he needs to realize the only way to get what he wants it to promote other candidates with the same fight in them and also better on the issues. Until that happens no amount of his hand-wringing about Trump is going to matter. It doesn’t matter what a person’s stance on issues are, until people see you’re willing to fight for them it doesn’t matter.

Mr. Wright,
A lot of us have been screwed over so often by “conservatives” who talked a good game, but once elected, they jumped in bed with the opposition.

Now, along comes Trump, whom I have disliked and distrusted in the past. So I scrutinized his every move, and parsed his every word in search of some indication of lack of commitment or disingenuousness. I did not detect any evidence of either; and believe me, my Mama named me right when she called me (doubting) Thomas.

Frankly, stupid as I might be, I think he’s gone too far to consider it a lark at some point and drop out because he got bored.

First of all, he’s taken these parents and loved ones of numerous victims of illegal aliens and given them his word of honor that he will not rest until that whole sorry situation is brought to a halt. Up to and including seeing that a fence is erected and enforced on the Mexican border.

Then he addressed 300+ Hollywood types at a “Friends of Abe” gathering and committed himself to the mission.

The he addressed a group of approximately 20,000 in Phoenix. And there, once more, he pledged that if he wins the nomination and gets elected he will follow through and DO the things the Boehners and the McConnells repeatedly promised to do but have totally abandoned once given an electoral majority.

The cherry on top for me was when a bereaved father, Mr. Shaw told how encouraged he and the other parents and loved ones are that Trump has stepped in and vowed to take a stand for them. Shaw went so far as to say that he now has multiple friends, some of them liberal democrats, who phone him to let him know if Trump is speaking on TV, and many of them pledging to vote for Trump.

So all the above being the case, I believe the only way Trump does not follow through is if the likes of Jebbie Bush defeats him for the nomination. To me, that’s like Pee Wee Herman going up against Joe Louis. There. I just dated myself.

Regards.
