While the Confederate battle flag is coming down from the State House grounds in South Carolina and around the nation, it continues to fly here in St. Mary's County, at the center of a privately owned monument next to the largest burial site of rebel soldiers in Maryland.
Clinton Cole took pictures of the private monument last week and shook his head.
"That flag stands for nothing but hate," said the 49-year-old Longview Beach man, who is black. "This is 2015, and we're still dealing with this?"
But Jim Dunbar, who heads the group that built the monument, says the flag stands for his heritage.
"It's a symbol of the whole defiance against the federal government," Dunbar said. "They were rebelling for the same reason their grandfathers fought in the Revolutionary War freedom from a strong centralized government."

False. It is not somewhat orchestrated. It is orchestrated in great detail.
Clinton Cole.
Go back to Long Beach.
You have overstayed your welcome.
This very large stars and bars flag still flies on I 81 just about a mile south of the Virginia line
The union Andersonville.
Point Lookout was a POW camp for confederate prisoners. Many succumbed to illnesses. Ignorance of history is scary.
I have been to that memorial. Quite tastefully done and not a touch of bias in it. Not far from it is the site of a POW camp where many Confederate soldiers perished.
The “Baltimore Sun” and the man quoted need to get over themselves.
Look for some idiot to try to take down the CBF.
You are correct.
Actually, although there is a Point Lookout State Park nearby, this memorial is on private property.
Well, at least St. Mary’s does not have any moques —yet. Do a search on “mosques in Southern Maryland”. Sickening.
Oh, and please watch your language; there are ladies present.
State park, private property, federal park it shouldn't matter. The Confederate flag is a part of the history of the site and it belongs there. It's truly sad that such a simple concept escapes so many people in government.
my friend, larry denton, published a book, “a southern star for maryland”.
his theory is that lincoln garrisoned baltimore with federal troops to prevent maryland from siding with the confederates, in which case, dc would have been surrounded.
My G Uncle on my father’s side, fighting with the 3rd NC Regiment was taken POW on the 3rd day of fighting at Gettysburg and send to Point Lookout, where he died in captivity in December 1863. His name is enscribed on the huge memorial for Confederate dead.
“The state song begins...”
Well, they are trying to get rid of the state song, too. I will say this: there are certain parts of Maryland that will put up a good fight on the PC war. Southern Maryland is one of the... Western Maryland is another. That being said, I have the feeling that Big Negro Mountain will have a name change in the immediate future.
Gov. William Donald Schaefer once referred to the Eastern Shore as a `s***house’. IIRC it’s more conservative than the rest of Maryland.
But compared to Virginia, the state is pretty liberal. At least the “Baltimore Bulldozer” Barbara Mikulski is fixing to retire.
I used to go boating from Solomons, MD to open water. Anyone remember the old lighthouse near the Patuxent NAS?
My wife’s G-g-Grandfather was from Wilson County, NC. He was in the 55th NC Infantry. He was captured at Gettysburg, died at Fort Delaware, and he lies in a mass grave at Point Finn in NJ. His name on the Confederate monument there.
My g-g-grandfather survived Point Lookout. He was exchanged at City Point in Feb. 1865.
Agreed
