Mexican drug lord Joaquin "El Chapo" Guzman — one of the world's most notorious crime figures — escaped a maximum security prison on Saturday via a 1,600 yard tunnel dug under his shower cell, Mexico's top security official said.
The brazen jailbreak is the second time Guzman, the powerful head of Mexico's Sinaloa drug cartel, has escaped a maximum security prison.
Guzman was last seen using the shower area at the Altiplano prison around 9 p.m. Saturday, the National Security Commission said in a statement. An alert was triggered when prison guards found his cell empty.
The tunnel was so elaborate that it had ventilation and stairs, Mexico's Security Commissioner Monte Alejandro Rubido said. A motorcycle that was used to remove dirt was also found, he said.
Flights were suspended at the nearby Toluca airport, while a manhunt stretched into surrounding states, the commission said.
Rubido said 18 employees from various part of the Altiplano prison, located about 56 miles west of Mexico City, had been taken in for questioning.

Someone that’s been executed won’t be digging a tunnel, and no one else would be digging one for him either.

No way would he have been able to do this without doling out generous bribes for certain people to look the other way. These drug barons are far too powerful to leave alive IMHO, they need to be terminated with extreme prejudice as you would a terrorist. The gangs they run are no better than ISIS or Al Qaeda anyway.
A guy is pushing a wheelbarrow out of work every day for 30 years and the security knows he is stealing something.
They stop him every day and sift through the dirt finding nothing.
On his last day they say we know you up to something, What by God are you stealing?

He is the one that started the ultra-violence in Mexico going back to 2006, for the most part. What a joke that he escaped, through a shower and a tunnel of more than one kilometer.
Was he entering “a shower area”, the Reuters story says he was entering “his shower area”; did he have his own shower? He was solitary probably. No way did he himself dig a tunnel that long.

Probably paid a mess of people to dig the tunnel from the outside, using gps to come up under his shower.
