One of America’s weirdest congressional districts has just been trashed by the Florida Supreme Court
Washington Post ^ | 7/10/15 | Miller & Fitzpatrick

.... Florida’s infamous 5th congressional district...runs from near Jacksonville in the North, hooks east for a few miles, then west for a few miles, narrows to the width of an Interstate highway for a while, cuts west all the way over to Gainesville, then swivels back east and southeast, finally arriving at Orlando, a distance of about 140 miles, sweeping in black neighborhoods along the way in order to create a “minority-majority” district.

Republicans drew special districts to GIVE A DISTRICT TO AFRICAN AMERICAN VOTERS.

The liberal Florida Supreme court just nixed all of the districts.

Cynthia McKinney’s district once ran as a single line down the middle of a highway.

Is this the redistricting that cost Allen West his election?

Creating a district like Florida’s CD 5 is a good move for the Republicans, confining as many racists as possible into one district, thus leaving the surrounding districts more White and more Republican.

*THAT* is why the liberal FL supreme court trashed the entire map — it benefits Republicans (in particular GOPe RINOs), not liberal Democrats.

That map was created by gutless GOP establishment types to also serve the purpose of eliminating conservative Reps like Allen West and Sandy Adams, and it was quite successful in doing so.

“Republicans drew special districts to GIVE A DISTRICT TO AFRICAN AMERICAN VOTERS.

The liberal Florida Supreme court just nixed all of the districts.”

From the article cited: “The Florida Supreme Court ruled Thursday that the state legislature must redraw at least eight congressional districts, including the 5th, that had been gerrymandered to favor the GOP.”

Your comment above does not comport with what the article says. The Supreme Court did not nix all of the distrcts, just 8 of them.

Take a look at Bobby Scott’s district in VA.

The article does go on:
“The Florida Supreme Court took a wrecking ball to Florida’s political landscape Thursday,” wrote Miami Herald reporter Mary Ellen Klas.

“The new maps are likely to reconfigure nearly all of the state’s 27 congressional districts, open the door to new candidates, and threaten incumbents, who will now face a new set of boundary lines and constituents close to the 2016 election,” Klas wrote.

....and the article actually cites Corrine Brown as being angry with the court. Hilarious.

Was the highway named "Martin Luther King Freeway?"

True..but if you have to redraw 1/3 of all the districts..in effect your'e going to have to redraw most, if not all of them.

Watch Corrine and the rest of the CBC go nuts over this..

Mel Watt’s district in NC ran from Durham to Charlotte. My house was in it for a primary but that changed for some reason.

I don’t know Perma. Lee Atwater first came up with the ‘majority minority’ formula and It did appear to be a good idea. However it gave us a bunch of entrenched, unqualified, senior black incumbents. Also it contributed to black isolation and block voting.
So .... was the formula good or bad for the country in the long run ?

More black districts mean more white Republican districts.

And down the Savannah River, nothing but water for a while until it got to black neighborhoods in the Savannah area.

No. West was in the West Palm Beach area. This is north of Orlando, stretching from the University of Florida to Jacksonville.

Which is what the court is complaining about. Not a single, gerrymandered district for black Democrats but several gerrymandered discticts for white Republicans.
