What a blessing that would be for people who fit the profile. I hope they pull it off.

I lost most of my hearing and hearing aids do nothing for me. So I’d be thrilled if it would work for me.

I guess that’s it for the Deaf rights movement.

Good afternoon, MUDDOG. I’m Deaf and I am fluent in ASL. I pay my taxes just like you. Do you have any other questions?

I am clarifying that not every Deaf person is an extremist.

My thought was that if deafness can be cured, that’ll pretty much end Deaf culture.

Doesn’t the deaf community resist cochlear implants and resist any “cure” for deafness as an affront to their culture?

I thought that. But if there’s really a cure, I can’t imagine most people refusing it.

Wow.

I’m surprised that they could do this much by simply injecting a small amount into the inner ear.

When I think “gene therapy”, I usually think whole body somatic gene therapy.

But I guess in this case, a small (relatively) amount of cells need treatment.

Good for them!

I guess some do, and probably get way more attention and respect that they should. I’m guessing you’re referring to the types who would try to deliberately engineer a deaf child so that the child would be closer to its parents’ culture.

I’m just hoping that someday, as I get older, there may be a way to get rid of my tinnitus and restore my hearing, which I’m sure will degrade badly as I age, given (like many of us from the Boomers onwards) have abused my hearing with loud dance clubs, concerts, and generally overly loud music. I’m 47 and I’ve already lost everything over 13 or 14 kHz (somewhat worse than average for my age) and the tinnitus drives me crazy sometimes.
