The city needs to move away from the idea that all families can live in their own home on a piece of land, according to a draft letter from a Seattle advisory committee.
If adopted, ideas being considered by a Seattle housing committee would be devastating to the city's appeal, KIRO Radio's Dori Monson said.
Get rid of single-family zoning in Seattle. That's the big message in a draft report being worked on by Mayor Ed Murray's housing committee, obtained by The Seattle Times.
According to a draft letter, the city needs to move away from the idea that all families can live in their own home on a piece of land, the Times reports.
"Today, as Seattle expands rapidly and experiences massive economic and population growth, we are held back by policies and historical precedents that are no longer viable for the long-term survival or our city," the draft letter from committee co-chairs Faith Pettis and David Werthheimer states.
The draft letter says that single-family zoning has "roots in racial and class exclusion. The zoning remains "among the largest obstacles to realizing the city's goals for equity and affordability," the Times reports.
"So owning your own home, on your own lot, is a blow against equity, according to this draft report," Dori said.
Some of the challenges the city faces includes almost two-thirds of the urban land being restricted to single-family homes, the letter continues. The letter considers increasing density almost everywhere in the city, the Times reports.

With a 19-3 vote, the committee recommends replacing single-family zoning with zoning that would allow for more multi-unit buildings, according to the Times.

Sounds very Commie like community. O wait the “enlighten” ones are communist. Our cities will look like China and perhaps Russia with all those houses looking like boxes. The Democrats want us to live in boxes.
Agenda 21 and communism on the move.
I wonder if the mayor and council members will be the first to bulldoze their homes to make room for Carbine Green West?
but what they'll get is everyone with the means will be gone.
Seattle talks out of both sides of their mouths........
Just yesterday they were talking adding a tax per mile driven
And now they want to make it so we are squished in together so no one will have to drive as the stores will be right there.
Good Lord, I am so glad that I have at most 40 years left on this Earth. I can’t take it anymore and hanging with Jesus sounds very appealing when I hear stories like this.
They could move in some unused Army Barracks form Ft. Lewis.
Meh, there are plenty of nearby suburbs to live at and watch Seattle self-implode.
I guessing that all the stately mansions on Queen Ann Hill will be grandfathered. Too much money and power reside there to allow this to apply to these neighborhoods. Liberals like to make rules that apply to the “little people” who need help to run their lives but exempt themselves from them because they’re special.
Well... they already look like China and will look more like China (oh well... hello Vancouver)
Maybe it’s time to regulate the market a bit better...
In this context, their approach is brilliant. It solves the problem instantly by ending all that massive economic and population growth. Genius!
God says each person will have their own grapes and their own fig tree.
That doesn't sound like apartment blocks to me.
Single family homes with associated property rights are “inefficient” land use, as it does not take into consideration the divisible nature of both surface and subsurface rights, or of air rights above the designated ownership.
Why is there even “ownership” in the first place? It is demeaning to those who do not happen to be in a position to become “owners”.
Rules set up years ago by dead white men. Are we going to bind ourselves to such an archaic set of notions?
(Curse it, do I HAVE to include the “< /sarcasm >” tag?)
Here’s an idea — let the market decide if the idea that all families can live in their own home on a piece of land.
Right... force residents to accept quarters in high-rise apartment buildings and require them to use public transportation.
It’s all about control.
Isn't it amazing? Just a few short decades ago America's leading Pop Culture Communist, Pete Seeger was railing against "Little Boxes."
"Your house is big enough for 13 families, comrade!"
And THERE is the basis for it all. Just as their Soviet forebears, these communists believe the fact the bourgeoisie have too much and they need to be knocked down to the level of poverty enjoyed by the rest of the masses.
The “leadership” of the Seattlunatics represent the very essence of cognitive dissonance. They routinely do things that are directly hostile to other things being actively pursued.
They are the living embodiment of Savage’s axiom, “Liberalism is a mental disorder”
I live in the shadow of the beast but never venture any closer than is absolutely necessary.
Apparently those communists believe that the scene of multiple families being moved into the Gromeko mansion in Moscow after the revolution should be the standard for Seattle. (reference to movie/book Dr. Zhivago)
