Why Ted Cruz is defending Donald Trump
The Washington Post's The Fix ^ | July 6, 2015 | Philip Bump

For the most part, the response from 2016 Republicans to Donald Trump’s comments about Mexican illegal immigrants has been uniform: tempered outrage. Rick Santorum was happy with the fact that Trump raised the issue, although not the words Trump used. (In case you didn’t hear the words — welcome back to Earth! — Trump said that "when Mexico sends its people," it sends people who are "bringing drugs. They’re bringing crime. They’re rapists.") Marco Rubio called the comments "offensive and inaccurate." Rick Perry was similarly offended. Jeb Bush deemed them "extraordinarily ugly."

But there’s a notable exception: Ted Cruz. Shortly after the issue flared up last week, Cruz said that Trump "speaks the truth" and didn’t need to apologize. He kept defending Trump over the weekend, saying Friday on Fox News that he thinks Trump is "terrific" and, on "Meet the Press," that he "salute[s] Donald Trump for focusing on the need to address illegal immigration." The suggestion that immigrants are rapists? "He has a colorful way of speaking."

So why is Cruz the outlier here? Let’s game this out....

Rubio called the comments “offensive and inaccurate”?

Why? He should have to defend his statements. Is it ethnic bigotry on his part?

The evidence is clear. The minute they step over the line illegally they have committed a crime and they know it.

Please Mr. “Republican” Rubio, tell us what’s offensive OR inaccurate. In so doing, expose yourself as the Leftist bigot and Spanish hegemonist that you are.

Very good article. I hope Trump last long enough for the debates.
I can see he and Cruz mopping the floor on these other clowns.

Sure Trump is right but I’d bet anything Cruz would hate to see him get elected president. I think Cruz has a great respect for this country.

Cruz and Trump are doing the same thing: telling the truth.

For Cruz to throw Trump under the bus would be suicide. They’ve committed themselves to one path: Speaking truth, and letting the chips fall where they may. If either of them deviates from that path, or fails to support the other ... that one is doomed.

So the author thinks Trump will drop out rather than lose money. Does he really think if Trump dropped out all would be forgotten? Not a chance. If anything the left would smell blood and redouble their attacks. Trump has spoken out for Americans against the globalist elites of the uniparty and must be destroyed as an example to everyone else. The only way for Trump to win is to win.

So much outrage that Trump is soaring in the polls. LOL! Cruz is smart enough to ride along. A rising tide lifts all boats.

I'd be curious to see if he gets any financial support thru La Raza.

I think it’s because Cruz thinks Trump is right on illegal immigration and the fence.

Trump’s support for his honesty crosses party lines which is a good thing.

The GOP-e’s tempered outrage is to be expected —they’re of Uniparty.

Any threat to their cheap R labor and D votes is to be immediately neutered, as they have been.

There is another significant R supporting Trump.

Steve King, R-IA

-----

"When CNN’s Chris Cuomo asked Rep. Steve King (R-IA) to respond on Wednesday morning to the comments that have caused so much business — if not political — trouble for Trump over the last couple of weeks, he did not hesitate to defend the presidential candidate. “I would say to Donald Trump, I appreciate the scrappiness of him,” King said of the candidate, “When he’s attacked by other people, he counterattacks and plunges forward and he delivers more facts to support the statement that he’s made.” Sometimes, King added, you have say things “real plain” instead of trying to be “nice” in order to get attention.

Repeating an argument Trump made in Iowa this weekend, King said that “many of these kids that are coming into the United States from Central America are sexually violated and raped.”

“I’d say in Donald Trump’s defense, someone’s doing that to these kids that are being raped and abused,” King continued. “And, when they’re coming across Mexico, it’s a reasonable assumption to conclude the people doing that are Mexicans.”
