SAN FRANCISCO (AP) A lawyer for San Francisco's sheriff's office says it had no authority to honor an immigration detainer on a suspect in the shooting death of a woman at a popular tourist destination.
Francisco Sanchez has seven felony convictions and has been deported five times, most recently in 2009, a federal agency said Friday. He was arrested about an hour after Wednesday's seemingly random slaying of Kathryn Steinle at Pier 14 one of the busiest attractions in the city.

Remember the shooting of a man and his two sons in 2008 (murder). Their crime, driving down a street. The murderer Edwin Ramos, was shielded by San Francisco.
From header, Years before he was accused of killing a man and his two sons, Edwin Ramos was a teen criminal shielded by city from deportation.
The man charged with killing a father and two sons on a San Francisco street last month was one of the youths who benefited from the citys long-standing practice of shielding illegal immigrant juveniles who committed felonies from possible deportation, The Chronicle has learned.
Edwin Ramos, now 21, is being held on three counts of murder in the June 22 deaths of Tony Bologna, 48, and his sons Michael, 20, and Matthew, 16. They were shot near their home in the Excelsior district when Tony Bologna, driving home from a family picnic, briefly blocked the gunmans car from completing a left turn down a narrow street, police say.
Ramos, a native of El Salvador whom prosecutors say is a member of a violent street gang, was found guilty of two felonies as a juvenile - a gang-related assault on a Muni passenger and the attempted robbery of a pregnant woman - according to authorities familiar with his background.
In neither instance did officials with the citys Juvenile Probation Department alert federal immigration authorities, because it was the city agencys policy not to consider immigration status when deciding how to deal with an offender. Had city officials investigated, they would have found that Ramos lacked legal status to remain in the United States.
Federal authorities, however, also missed an opportunity to take Ramos into custody just this past March - after they had learned of his immigration status and started deportation proceedings, and after Ramos was arrested in San Francisco on a gun charge. For reasons the federal agents cannot explain, they did not put an immigration hold on Ramos.

I believe KAMALA HARRIS (rumored for Supreme Court appointment if Barry gets one), had a lot to do with the Sanctuary stuff. The only Talk Show host that I remember going ballistic over this was Savage (2008).
In 2003, Kamala Harris was elected District Attorney of San Francisco. She was re-elected in 2007 and served from 2004 to 2011.
I wonder how much Trump paid this guy...
The alternative is the not very attractive prospect of just rounding up the people without regard to their reason for being on American soil and disposing of them by whatever expeditious means become available.
I’m confused. Immigration gave the illegal alien back to San Francisco because they had an active drug warrant so why did SF release them?
This is liberal “logic” for you. No reason to hold this guy whatsoever....good grief.
yep
You beat me to this.
I hope this woman’s family sues San Francisco blind. Then fire this Horne woman.
Show these tyrants there are consequences to their actions.
San Francisco County Sheriffs Legal Counsel Freya Horne is criminally responsible for that woman's death.
This is a widely adopted position, don't ya know...
"She just kept saying, 'Dad, help me, help me,'" Sullivan said. That is heartbreaking, just heartbreaking. I can't imaging the emotional pain.
I know the state can't stop all the criminals, but this is not a time to justify catch and release. Admit that the policy regretably results in some amount of death and destruction, if you feel an urge to talk about it.
Sanctuary city, take your life in your hands (spit). The place deserves just about anything that happens to it.
No legal basis?
Let me get this straight:
California has a three-strikes law (or if not, imagine this in another state)
The perp is a loser something like seven times over, plus his five catch and release raps. He’s in for a dozen.
But, since the perp isn’t an American citizen, he only gets just-in-time, memoryless, short-sided, politicized justice. No three strikes for him.
But if you’re a citizen...
Yes you did have a legal reason for holding him...an ICE detainer. Before I retired, I was responsible for prisoner releases, and if I had an ICE detainer, I always coordinated with ICE to ensure the detainer was still valid, and if it was, to arrange transportation to the facility were federal prisoners were held. There was none of this sanctuary city BS. Enacting such feel-good laws has consequences, deadly consequences, in this case. I bet the victim's family doesn't feel so good about Frisco's policy.
"Adoptions" are not mandatory. If it's an adopted position, then they did it of their own accord, and are responsible for the consequences.
Too bad it wasn’t the Sheriff’s spouse instead of an innocent victim .... bet the Sheriff would have found a reason to hold him!!!!!
He probably wanted his guaranteed 3 meals a day & cable TV. He will be greeted behind bars, some will honor him as a hero, or at least he will have more status. I will never forget this statement from some legal immigrants: “oh, come on, the jails in the US are like the hotels in Mexico.”
Sooner or later, our broken “justice system” is going to learn what vigilante justice means.
Sanctuary cities are in violation of federal law. I think SF leadership needs their heads unscrewed then rescrewed back on again CORRECTLY. Federal law TRUMPS their law. Did I say ‘TRUMPs’?
I hope San Francisco tourism takes a big hit after this.
