Former CNN anchor and Manzano High School graduate Lynne Russell told Action 7 News she and her husband Chuck de Caro were robbed at gunpoint around 11:30 p.m. at the Motel 6 near Coors and Iliff.
De Caro worked as a correspondent for CNN.
Russell said they were exhausted Tuesday night and decided to go to a motel to rest. She had gone to the car to get something when a man put a gun to her head, dragged her back into the motel room and demanded her valuables.
"The man pushed me inside, I was airborne, literally. And (I) landed on the bed, and that was about the time that Chuck came out of the shower," Russell said. "The man was just wild. He was pointing the gun, and the way that he was acting, it was as if he'd done it before."
Russell said she and her husband legally carry handguns, and they had them in the motel room.
For a moment, she said, it looked like the thief just wanted her husband's briefcase.
"He came over, grabbed the briefcase, and I thought for a moment he was just going to leave because he had something," Russell said. "Then he turned around and he opened fire. My husband returned fire. And he's a better shot."
According to police, both men fired multiple rounds.
Russell said her husband was hit three times. He underwent surgery at University of New Mexico Hospital and is expected to be there for a few days while he recovers.
Officers found the other man in the parking lot. He died at the scene.

But the maggot food will still be voting in 2016.
Agreed
I’m wondering what in the heck were they doing at a Motel 6 on the way to California? Getting robbed at 11:30 at night there?
I had to stay at a Motel 6 one night in Virginia for work. They made everybody renew their stay (reswipe their credit cards or pay cash at) at midnight. They gave me a first floor room with a broken latch on the sliding window. Whores, druggies and transients walking up and down the hall all hours of the night. Terrible place, but I had nowhere to go, everything else was filled nearby and I had to be there two days for work.
I recall something about her having been a reserve deputy sheriff. I wouldn’t jump to conclusions on this.
If she and her husband are packing heat, then I bet 10 to 1 she is a closet conservative.
What difference does it make that this broad was CNN employee...are they going to list everybody’s past employment history if they defend themselves ?...Jane a former wal-mart employee survived a car jacking?......get my jist?...teleprompter readers and talking heads are FAR to self-important....screw CNN and in closing zI am glad they are OK but this wench has probably done more damage going along with liberal CNN for a paycheck while drumming into the inept American population the problem with firearms...I got mixed feelings on the story.
A room at this hotel is going for $56/ night for two adults on expedia. Gets good reviews though.
Husband looks like he’s saying...”look what I got”.
Now that’s a man!
That’s what I was thinking. How the mighty have fallen
Maazel tov.
Is it better or worse than this one?
I can’t speak for his wife but Chuck was in my squadron at Air Force many moons ago. To consider him liberal is a bit absurd.
Recent photo? She looks pretty damned good.
I think... we should be celebrating the fact that he took out a threat to people - some low-life thug who’s probably done this before to other innocent folks - more, and focusing less on their assumed political leanings.
They survived, because they CARRY, and THAT is the lesson here; and it is Point Numero Uno.
Carry: “If It Saves Just ONE life...”
I’m Tom Bodett for Motel 6, and we’ll leave the holster on for you.
Lynne Russell is a former police officer, I think she said she was a detective. She has said, over the course of her time on CNN, that she still carried a gun.
Interesting note: the police are waiting on the decedent’s identification from the Medical Examiner. Which suggests that his face might not be entirely recognizable.
Someone, who knows how to do so, please get this news story to Piers Morgan.... ASAP.
The only time I have ever been accosted at a hotel, or motel, over thousands of miles of domestic car travel was in Albuquerque, NM. It was Christmas, and a man stepped out where he had been concealed behind an archway support and demanded money for gas when were were on our way to breakfast. My husband gave him $20, and he went on his way, thankfully.
Since then we have been careful about the motels we choose. We never stay on the first floor, with our room opening directly to the parking lot. We always stay at larger, more expensive, hotels that have all their amenities inside. We park in a lighted area and keep the car doors locked with nothing visible on the seats when we leave the car for the night.
Either that or he doesn’t have any identification.
I was on a jury case once where the defendant was tried as John Doe because they didn’t know his real name.
