'Fed up' conservatives plot revenge against Boehner

Dozens of members of the House GOP's most conservative faction plan to meet Tuesday to discuss ways to counteract the decision of House Speaker John Boehner and other leaders to seek retribution against members who vote against must-pass measures.

The House Freedom Caucus, a GOP group made up of about 40 of the most conservative members, plans to hold the discussion some time after Tuesday's evening votes, according to lawmakers familiar with the initiative.

Freedom Caucus Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, said Monday in a radio interview that many conservatives were "fed up" with the string of punishment meted out to members who don't vote in line with the Republican leadership on key legislation.

The latest punishment was handed down to Rep. Mark Meadows, R-N.C., for voting against an important procedural resolution to advance "Fast Track" trade legislation the GOP is eager to pass. Meadows last week was stripped of his chairmanship of the House Oversight Government Operations subcommittee.

"So, Mark Meadows, a good man, a good friend, and what they did to him is exactly wrong, and there are a number of us who are fed up with it," Jordan said on the Laura Ingraham show. "And we are looking for ways that we can say, hey, we are going to stay with Mark and be as helpful as we possibly can."

It's not clear what the frustrated group could do to thwart Boehner, but some are kicking around the idea of trying to slow the work of the House. Freedom Caucus members say that while they number a little more than three dozen, there are an additional 20 conservatives who could potentially vote along with them if they decided to take a stand against the leadership by making it difficult to pass legislation.

This is why Mitt Romney, the Chamber of Commerce, and the Establisment worked so hard last year to prevent more conservatives from getting into the House and Senate, so they could shut them out and not require their votes.

What a role model for democracy the GOPe is.
You can vote, but you’ll be punished if you don’t vote the way we tell you to.

Yeah, they really shook things up, didn’t they? Some crap about Pelousy could end up getting more votes than any GOP and ending up as speaker? Very strange......

I think the election of the Speaker in early 2015 was foiled by some last-minute parliamentary shuffling and a power play by the Establishment representatives.

There was a revolt that had sort of formed up, but it got scattered before serious deliberations were put in motion.

Weird situation: What if the dissident Republicans had cast votes for Nancy Pelosi, instead of Boehner? Not that it would have been any better (in fact, much, much WORSE), but it would have made the possibility of lining up working coalitions in the House something like a Chinese fire drill.

There is one sure fire way to get rid of Boner. Call for a new election for speaker and vote for Pelosi. The next day call for another election and vote for a true conservative. The rinos may stick with Pelosi but at least Boner wouldn’t be speaker and we’ll see how long his “followers” stick with him.

My congressman said that someone should have run against Boehner in that house election right after the 2014 election (before the new members were seated) and then the vote wouldn't have been a lock for Boehner when they voted the second time.

I sort of understand what he is saying but don't agree with it.

Let them all switch to Independents or strike a deal with the Dems to be like the old Blue Dog Dems and make a difference. Take the power away from Boehner - he’s no different than a Dem anyway.

I switched to an Independent precisely due to this lack of leadership. Hence my moniker.

Bad plotting if I am reading about here.

Aren’t plots like this better kept secret until implemented?

The same Jim Jordan that always talked about how he would continue to support Boehner even in the face of the continued Tea Party purge? Suddenly he’s a conservative and speaks for “many conservatives”?

Kabuki theater continues.
