Hawaii’s governor has signed a bill to make his state the first to raise the legal smoking age to 21.

The measure aims to prevent adolescents from smoking, buying or possessing both traditional and electronic cigarettes. Gov. David Ige signed it into law Friday.

Dozens of local governments have similar bans, including Hawaii County and New York City.

“Raising the minimum age as part of our comprehensive tobacco control efforts will help reduce tobacco use among our youth and increase the likelihood that our keiki will grow up tobacco-free,” said Ige, using the Hawaiian word for children.

In Hawaii, 86 percent of adult smokers began smoking before age 21, according to the governor’s office. …

So, all the seaman, airman and soldiers on the Islands can’t smoke? What is the legal drinking age in Hawaii?

Just like the law that banned concealed carry in churches saved those nine black people in Charleston?

California has a similar bill that is likely to be passed by the end of the year.

so you cannot buy cigarettes in the other 49 but you may smoke if you are a teen (or younger). As long it is not a smoking prohibited area.
I it is against the law for teens to buy tobacco , why is there no law against their smoking? I cannot google an answer.

In most cases, adult video purchases the buyer has to be 21 as well.

Might as well raise the age to buy lottery tickets, vote, and serve in the military to 21 too.

Yep. If you are old enough to make the decision to bleed, you are old enough to make the decision smoke and drink. If not, then change the age requirements to enlist in the military to 21.

The goes for voting as well. If a person is not considered mature enough to smoke and drink at the age of 18, why are they considered old enough to vote and bleed at that age?

I’ve been waiting for some idiot in particular states to sue and take the episode to the Supreme Court. If they say smoking and drinking ages must be 21....I don’t see how you avoid then the voting question. Personally, I wouldn’t have a problem with the voting age set at 21.

I am kinda wondering....if you come across some 15-year-old kid smoking weed....what exactly are you going to do to the kid? Fine? Fine the parents or fine the kid? Required anti-smoking classes? Two weeks in some detention center? This seems to me to be a bogus deal and thinking you will change behavior.

All this is going to do is to make it cool for 18 year old “children” to smoke so they look like they’re 21.

Pointless anti-smoking law will not decrease kids from smoking anyways. If you’re old enough to work/live on your own then you’re old enough to make other choices. What a frigging ridiculous law.

I remember back when they were attacking booze in the 80’s. I was a problem drinker back then, and a lot of us asked why the attention was all on booze and not smokes.

So this 21 movement, which will start in the wackiest, nutville states, is a culmination of the attack on smoking from three decades ago. I’m surprised it took this long.

And voting. And might as well raise the drinking, smoking, voting, and joining the military until you turn 26 since we want to become a nanny state, sit around in my pajamas drinking coco in my parents basement society.
