House approves fast-track 218-208, sending bill to Senate

The House on Thursday took the first step toward resuscitating the White House’s trade agenda by passing legislation granting President Obama fast-track authority.

The bill now goes to the Senate, where the White House and GOP leaders are seeking to strike a deal with pro-trade Democrats.

The House vote was 218-208, with 28 Democrats voting for it.

This is the second time in a week the House has voted to approve the controversial fast-track bill. On Friday, the House voted 219-211 in favor of fast-track, which would make it easier for Obama to complete a sweeping trans-Pacific trade deal.

In last week’s vote, the House GOP paired the fast-track bill with a measure known as Trade Adjustment Assistance (TAA) that gives aid to workers displaced by trade. Both measures needed to be approved in separate votes for the entire package to move forward.

House Democrats have historically favored TAA, but they voted against it on Friday to kill fast-track, which is deeply opposed by unions and other liberal groups.

The White House still wants both measures to reach Obama’s desk, but is now advancing a different strategy that would see the two bills move separately.

In what way are they traitors? This is who they were up until about June of 2014. We’re just stupid for thinking they were on our side.

Anyone who thinks Obama won’t get everything he wants is nuts.

Because it's also what Boner wants.

And if 246 Republicans, the largest GOP majority since 1931, had been against giving Barack Obama Fast Track Authority it wouldn’t have passed.

Them’s the facts,

Captain Obvious strikes again.

That wasn't the point, but thanks for playing.

BILL TITLE: To amend the Internal Revenue Code of 1986 to allow Federal law enforcement officers, firefighters, and air traffic controllers to make penalty-free withdrawals from governmental plans after age 50, and for other purposes

So it not only supports a secret treaty, it declares that certain people are a special breed of cats who don't have to wait until age 59 like the rest of us peasants?

You made a point and I made a different point. Do you believe that the political party that is in the majority controls the legislative agenda in the House of Representatives? Do the Republicans currently have their largest majority since 1929-1931?
To me, the votes of 190 members of the majority are more significant than the votes of 28 members of the minority.

Yet the public is still out of hearing anything until the 60-day period. They end up waiting until the tail end of the process, where the likeliness for change is at its lowest.

I don’t support such confinement of public access to the text (read: more than Congress) to a carefully-controlled period of time.

Yes the republicans did screw the country. How can people blame this on the Democrats when the Republicans control the house and the senate.

Freepers are bashing Trump, but Trump is the only candidate who seems to understand the trade issues. And Trade is at the root of our economic and unemployment issues. And that’s at the root of our national debt and has been an enabler of big government.

That the GOP wanted TPA was never in doubt, nor an issue.

The Dems made a big show of fighting TPA and Obama last week.

But when push came to shove this afternoon, they did not follow through.

They could have been the good guys in all of this, but they choose not to.

Perhaps it was scripted, perhaps not. This was THEIR moment not to screw America, but they could not help themselves, being the creatures of habit that they are.

On this vote for TPA, they were in control—don’t kid yourself otherwise.

Perhaps reading comprehension makes no sense to you.

Please read my replies on this thread to see what the real issue was today, behind the smoke and mirrors.

Agree with the sentiment but these aren’t RINOs. They’re Republicans. Proud members of the Uniparty.

This is what they’re about and this is what they do.

How much of the trade agreement process has been, or ever has been public? TPA gives us more access and input than we have had to date. Without TPA, TPP goes to Congress for vote with no public input at all.

Who is that guy on the right? Is that St. Rafael, the Patron Saint of globalists?

“I will NEVER vote again in a national election. 2010 and 2014 were total WASTES.”

Welcome aboard! We anti-voters are a small but happy group. And with the exception of 2008, we’ve won pretty much every election.

“So, who are you supporting for president? Did your candidate vote “NO” today?

Happily, I have no candidate. None whatsoever. They’re pretty much all bought and paid for.

I really should start an anti-vote pinglist.
