In the wake of months of unrest and a record month of murders, Baltimore may be a tough sell to potential vacationers as a destination for care-free summer fun.
That won't stop hotels, restaurants, attractions and city officials in Charm City, who insist they are up for the challenge.
For Baltimore's economy, the stakes are high. About 80,000 local jobs are dependent on the tourism industry, and close to 24 million tourists visited the city and spent $5.15 billion in 2013, a 2.2 percent increase in visitor spending over the year before.

Who went on vacation in Baltimore before the riots? Why?
We’ll forget about Baltimore as soon as the Black community forgets about the KKK. Which in point of fact will be never.
Maybe they could play the Jurassic Park theme; turn it into an adventure destination.
I’ll be in Baltimore during the 4th. This is a neighborhood in flames, not the entire city. I go once or twice a year to Baltimore. Generally, it’s a nice town - and I’ll salute Francis Scott Key while I’m there and ignore the ugly Americans who try, yet again, to destroy a beautiful city.
Now the city will add request of more money to make up for the unfortunate lack of tourism to the already requested $20+ million. Mayor will end up with a gold-plated BFV by the time that this ends.
I go to visit pals. We go to the inner harbor, Fells Point for dinner and visit the small art galleries and museums. I’ve never been taken to Camden Field, unfortunately.
I’ll be there on the 4th. I love cities and support them despite what went on.
I went a few years ago to see the inner harbor, ships and Fort McHenry. The Constellation was just returning from a multi-year refit and there was a big celebration with fire boats spaying and a National Guard unit firing artillery salutes. We enjoyed it.
Never going back.
How are they doing that? By making the riot objects appear larger than they really are?
nobody vacations in the hood - ever
The only Baltimore I’d visit in the future is the one in County Cork, Ireland. Nice little fishing village.
Right! I would NEVER go to Baltimore or frankly, Maryland, as a tourist. True or not, from here in California it seems like a real pit.
Let’s see if we can come up with a new slogan to help their tourism industry:
Come visit Baltimore City,
We have everything you need for fun,
But the police will not protect you,
As they will not pull out their gun.
If you are white with money,
You are a target by a robber
If you are black without
Then you are welcome to be a mobber.
Been to Baltimore a few times because I had to.
If Maryland wants folks to visit Baltimore, then they need to pass a Constitutional Carry law.
If I was given a free hotel stay I still would not go.
From here in Kansas I am laughing in both directions.
Camden Yards. Beautiful ballpark
