A certain type of high-powered nail gun may technically qualify as a firearm in Oregon -- meaning that purchasers could be subject to criminal background checks.
That prospect has legislators scrambling to change the law to avoid being accused of making tool buyers go through new regulatory hoops.
Senate Judiciary Chairman Floyd Prozanski, D-Eugene, on Thursday won approval of his committee to amend a House-passed gun bill to include language making it clear that a "low-velocity powder-actuated tool or similar apparatus" is not a firearm under Oregon law.

I suppose you could fire a nail by holding down the safety. But hauling that compressor and a long extension cord would make it a bit less usable than, say, a flintlock.

It is amazing how wimpy we have become that we want to restrict nail gun sales. You can’t even take nail clippers anywhere any more. My feeling is if someone can kick your butt with a pair of nail clippers, you deserve to have your butt kicked.

I remember the purple shots were for driving into steel. The foreman had to personally approve their use and they were hot. I often wondered if the Hilti gun could be rigged into use as a firearm. It would certainly not have been accurate or have any penetration outside a very close range.

The low bidder on redoing the floor at my defense employer brought in a crew of Mexicans. Apparently nobody told him he needed to bring American citizens and there would be a background check. So they checked the Mexican’s ID’s. They claimed to be American citizens but they all had the identically same ID. It would have been hilarious if it hadn’t pointed out just how screwed we are.
They’re talking about the nail guns that .22 loads.
the nail guns in question are technically powder actuated tools. they have a cartridge similar to a .22 or .25 caliber pistol
they drive a wide variety of nails or studs into concrete or steel but mostly concrete
