Two young sisters with an "entrepreneurial spirit" set up a lemonade stand in Overton, Texas, to raise money for their dad's Father's day gift, their mom said.
But Andria and Zoey Green's business closed abruptly Monday after police came by to tell them their stand was illegal without a city Peddler's Permit, according to Overton Police Department Chief Clyde Carter.
"It's illegal to sell lemonade without a permit," Carter told ABC News today. "But we didn't tell them to shut down, we just asked them to get a permit."
The girls' mother, Sandi Evans, said they went to try to get a Peddler's Permit at City Hall, but found out they'd have to get licensed by the Rusk County Health Department before being allowed a Peddler's Permit.
SNIP.
"Once we found out everything we would have to go through, we just decided to stop technically selling the lemonade," Evans told ABC News today. "The girls are still going to have the stand, but they're just going to ask for donations instead."

Well here’s the “Overton PD Webpage!

Three clapped out Crown Vics “in the Piney Woods of East Texas!”
The Chief Clyde Carter (wonder if he’s related to Jimmah) danes to show us his picture. Texas, your reputation is showing. You’re not a whole lot different that most of the other states once someone pulls back the curtain on your rural areas. Just wonder if they have any Cool Hand Luke’s cutting off the heads of their parking meters?
“The girls are still going to have the stand, but they’re just going to ask for donations instead.”
The girls have learned two good lessons here. The awful nature of bureaucracy and how to work around it.
And unless you’re gay, black, or handicapped they ignore the story. Then what?
You’re free.
However you need a permit.
Who seems to have gotten their panties in a wad, these people, or the government? Over a kids’ lemonade stand.
The president actually demands officers to NOT follow the law concerning illegals, but these kids, oh this is just not permissable and must be made an example out of.
It’s the hypocrisy and the double standard under the law that is what people are reacting to. Something far minor than illegals breaking federal immigration laws of a sovereign country vs two little girls selling lemonade at a stand they will do it for for only a few days.
Flunkie is too nice for these parasites.
When is the last time a cop stopped an illegal alien selling tamales on the street from a tamale wagon?
Fortunately, I have 2-3 acquaintances in local media who are conservative (a rarity). One is editor of our local paper.
One of the local radio stations was talking about this as I drove to work this morning.
The kids were going to take dad to a water park for fathers day. Now they are also going to Six Flags. They said that the girls lemonade stand would continue today or maybe even over the weekend.
Two radio stations were going to be there live. The kids will make more money than they ever imagined.
Yaknow, kids running lemonade stands may be TECHNICALLY illegal in most of the country, but MOST of the time cops aren’t petty little assholes about it, they’re professionals who successfully manage the power of discretion inherent in their civic authority and get on down the road; often with a cup of cold juice in-hand.
Failure of publicly-paid police to rise to that level of expected professional behavior is not “nothing”; it’s an egregious error in judgment made in the line of duty, and a hallmark of people who have NO business whatsoever being uniformed officers of the Law.
BS. I distinctly recall an America that never would have bend over for this kind of heavy handed government bull sh**.
The little kids should tell the cops to beat it and keep selling their lemonade. I'd love to see the additional avalanche of foul vile PR the cops and city get when they fine, jail or seize the kids money and lemonade.
The Texas lemonade standoff!! Against controlling punitive overreaching reckless government.
Of course they'd go after the parents and likely threaten to send in the Texas Child Protective Services Division to impound their kids until they comply.
Do it kids!
Thank you.
I take that as a compliment from you.....who are you? Oh some anonymous nothing on the internet. Oh my, you must really think I care what you think. Gosh I can’t even remember a single thread we shared anything so why do you think calling me a name of some sort would interest me in the least? I guess if you were in my class in high school, college or grad school or perhaps served with me in the Navy or maybe in my family, I might care but some stranger that I have no idea who you are...nope. Thanks for playing. Perhaps you can go off on some stupid picket over a lemon aid stand and somebody might care. I doubt it but you can give it a try. Later....hahaha. You crack me up.
I can never resist a lemonade stand run by kids. I always give them $1 regardless of the asking price.
I then pour it out as soon as I am out of sight.
Or selling temales out of the trunk of their car at Walmart.
These children missed a perfect opportunity. All they had to do is to declare that they were transsexuals. The headline would read, “Police Shut Down Transsexual Child’s Lemonade Stand!” The chief of police would immediately throw the officers under the bus. Donations would pour in.
A sole proprietorship is a business.
Get Caitlyn Jenner over there to buy some lemonade and the media will suddenly be in FULL support of those poor children selling lemonade.
