Best of class? In Dublin (Ohio), 222 grads tie (for valedictorian)
Columbus Dispatch ^ | June 3, 2015 | Charlie Boss

Graduation ceremonies might still be going on if Dublin schools had asked all of its valedictorians to speak.

There were 222 of them.

That means two out of every 10 graduates at Dublin’s three high schools received top honors this year.

[Snip]

The valedictorian was once the single highest-performing graduate — and some districts, such as Hilliard and South-Western, still adhere to the practice. But experts say it’s more typical to see multiple valedictorians or none at all as educators try eliminate the competition among students to be No. 1 of their class.

We cannot have academic competition because the losers might suffer from poor esteem for life.

I'm not disagreeing with you here, but isn't that essentially the same sentiment that drives the "Cloward-Piven effect" ?

No biggie. They are just words. The schools failing their students in this matter is another issue entirely though.

No, Cloward pushes it to happen. We can’t do anything to STOP it from happening. I’m just being Capt. Obvious in saying it.

excerpt explains why:

Dublin’s high schools had offered only one student the title of valedictorian until 2008, when officials changed the rules to help more students become eligible for college scholarships linked to valedictorian status.

Doing so has given students an incentive to take advanced classes and to do well in them for a chance at recognition, said Dublin Scioto Principal Bob Scott.

“Since it becomes more attainable, more kids will reach for it,” he said. “They end up pushing themselves, challenging themselves and digging deeper and going after it.”

It looks like we don’t need illegal immigration to have valedictorians - we can just manufacture our own in bulk.

"So, you said you graduated valedictorian, eh? congratulations. How does it feel to be alone at the top?"
"Well, I'm not exactly alone...there were about two hundred other valedictorians."
"wait...let me get this straight...you said there were
two hundred other valedictorians???!! But you can only have one valedictorian!!!"
"Well, we didn't want anybody to feel bad."

Grade inflation on steroids.

Probably lots of those neat little exams where you can score more than 100.

Remember the good old days of ABC’s Wide World of Sports: ‘the human drama of intense competition’; ‘The thrill of victory, and the agony of defeat’?

Back when goils was goils and men was men...

People smoked cigars and cigarettes and drank booze and there was no such thing as a kid’s bicycle helmet.

And America was strong and free and held the promise of rising as high as one’s abilities (and hard work) would allow them.

But now we have this...
