No biggie. They are just words. The schools failing their students in this matter is another issue entirely though.

excerpt explains why:

Dublin’s high schools had offered only one student the title of valedictorian until 2008, when officials changed the rules to help more students become eligible for college scholarships linked to valedictorian status.

Doing so has given students an incentive to take advanced classes and to do well in them for a chance at recognition, said Dublin Scioto Principal Bob Scott.

“Since it becomes more attainable, more kids will reach for it,” he said. “They end up pushing themselves, challenging themselves and digging deeper and going after it.”
