Mulling McKinney: A New Normal
Townhall.com ^ | June 11, 2015 | Randy Sutton

Based on the recent firestorm surrounding the events in McKinney, Texas, it appears the ‘new normal’ threshold for demanding swift justice and national condemnation of police officers is a short video clip followed by social media outrage.

There is more to the McKinney incident than 20 seconds of video, but it is that image of a white uniformed police officer using force on a black teenage girl which has again inflamed a nation too eager to cry racism when it comes to the work of our cops. The video clip is disturbing taken out of context of the remainder of the seven-minutes of footage, which is nowhere to be seen.

The fights, the verbal, and physical intimidation against bystanders trying to enjoy a day at the pool that led to the police being called are apparently not newsworthy. Thus far there has been no effort to bring some perspective to this sensationalized caricature of a news story, which The New York Times was quick to note has led to “collective outrage across social media”.

Is this really the new benchmark for justice?

Al Sharpton has already chimed in with his demand for the arrest of the officer. The town’s mayor announced that he was “disturbed and concerned” instead of calling for calm and not a rush to judgment.

Once again the bad guys in this little vignette aren’t the young people that invaded the party and brought with them alcohol, drugs, and their own lack of respect to what should have been a happy end-of-school celebration. No, the new normal tells us that it’s the police who are the problem. It’s the one cop dealing with a chaotic situation who must in some way be racist or at least accused of excessive use of force.

The new normal means that the media will largely ignore the social media postings by witnesses that combat this media portrayal, noting as one member of the neighborhood did, that the party turned into a “mob event” where two pool security guards were assaulted along with a mother with three little girls. That witness post clearly tells the story not being told. “The video doesn’t show everything…I commend the officer for handling this situation.”

Voices like those are too often lost in the wilderness of agenda based reporting, racial politics, and a public all too willing to believe in the false narrative of racially motivated policing.

Trying to control a large and unruly crowd in order to investigate and provide a safe environment for the community, by two or three police officers is a daunting and dangerous task. It is ludicrous that some commentators are using the footage of the officer briefly pulling out his weapon, as an illustration that he was “out of control. What they ignore is the two young men coming up on his gun side in the video. Any cop with any experience knows how vulnerable he is to attack and that the removal of his weapon could lead to his death. During the brief seconds when he drew his weapon, he assessed the threat, which ended when the two young men ran, and he quickly returned the gun to his holster.

There is a common denominator to all of the high profile events since the Ferguson fiction of “Hands Up Don’t Shoot” and they are at work here in McKinney. It is called “non-compliance.” There is a time to question authority, but it is not when the police are conducting an investigation like this one. We are all accountable for our decisions and when someone makes the conscious decision not to obey a lawful order of a police officer, make no mistake, there will be some consequence.

When all is said and done with the incident in McKinney, the officer will be accountable for his actions. I hope that those in positions of authority in his agency and in the city government are not influenced by the new normal.

I finally watched the whole video.

I side with the cop.

I kinda see it this way: Those who like sausage should not watch it being made. Those who like law and order in their neighborhoods should probably not watch how the cops deal with mouthy and disrespectful teen (or adults, for that matter).

But the video also proves what I have said for over a decade: Only fools and thugs aspire to be cops in our current culture. At least body cams may level the playing field for cops - as in “once we see it go down from their video perspective, we won’t blame them much of the time.”

Repeat:

“That is a shame but he has a great future in many other Texas towns and cities where he is an absolute phenom.”

That Policeman does has a future in Texas...I saw restraint on the Policeman’s part...when the dumb (white)sucker tried to run around behind the officer...

the (white) dumb sucker isn’t dead.

That is restraint.

...If the (white) dumb sucker doesn’t change his ways...

the percentages will catch up with him...

soon...

at 850-1400 fps...

The pastor-ing business is good right now....

Give haughty, indignant speeches full of cliches and stand by to grab 20% of the hush money paid out to thug bikini girls - strictly for church improvements, of course.

By the way, I thought all the pre-party advertising said ‘dime pieces’ would be attending. I didn’t realize they meant females worth an actual dime (10 cents).

We will soon get to the point where the police won’t respond to all but the most egregious of crime reports and it will be up to people and neighborhoods to police themselves.

The “leadership” is proving its inability to control negro behavior. Western society is so badly fractured that it is unable to effectively resist any behavior from members of the negro demographic no matter how bad the behavior is.

That cop had his lawyer and his union, yet when he saw himself running around hysterically, like Barney Fife, he instantly resigned.

The guy was out of control.

Just like the Chief of Police, Mark Furhman can’t make any sense of this guy’s chicken with his head cut off running around, either.

The new normal:
Draw a gun or use force and you’d better have 100 percent, videographed, irrefutable proof that your life was in danger by someone armed with a firearm and imminently intending to use it.

Cop or CCW carrier, anywhere outside of your house, it doesn’t matter.

It’s just the new reality.

Now the white woman fighting in the video has been suspended from her job. She’s alleged to have “instigated” everything:

Yep. Who needs a court of law? Now Twitter users are your judge and jury.

Lest anyone accuse me of racism here, due to personal reasons, I have no tolerance for racist nonsense.

But, does anyone even know for sure who started that fight? Do we know for sure that she used a racial slur? Has she been charged with a crime?

Apparently, all that matters is that Twitter decided she must be destroyed.

Swift justice.

The whole meme of “cop as thug” is being hyped and spread at viral speed around all the social media of this and other countries. This is the social protests of the late 1960’s and early 1970’s, now on steroids, with not even the blessed interval of “Summer of Love”. In this new phase, there are no “flower children”, there are only hard-eyed revolutionaries who are dedicated to making the circumstance of being an American something to be ashamed of.

Anyone who aspires to become a cop in this current political climate has to be a fool or a masochist, because there shall be NO slack cut for anybody in law enforcement, and the policeman is more likely to be prosecuted and punished for his involvement in an arrest than the perpetrator of the crime itself.

So the cop goes to “doing it by the book”. Involvement with the community goes to just about zero, or the only “arrests” made will be for persons who may have just committed a small indiscretion, but not for the major crime in progress.

After all, what’s the use of doing a commendable job? Nobody will give you credit for a job well done. But they are sure quick with criticism.

And not constructive criticism, either.

The guy was out of control.

I don't think he was out of control. I read him as overwhelmed by the situation after an already bad day (read his previous calls). There is no sign that he posed a danger to others, just that he had less patience than was needed for the entitled urban youths he was facing. The uninvited guests at that neighborhood's private pool were out of line, and he failed to handle the situation in a photogenic manner.

There is fault on both sides, but it's not as bad as portrayed on the police officer's side. On the teenagers' side, I expect some of those kids to get shot while pushing their luck in the next couple of years, and they will deserve it. If their parents don't care enough to correct them and their community doesn't care enough to step in when the parents fall short, I will not shed a tear when the natural consequences of being brats catch up with them.

You know, you’re right. The culture has changed enough where “thugs” need not apply. And, frankly, just KNOWING they are being recorded will not only modify cops’ behavior, but also the behavior of anyone coming into contact with them in the line of duty.

It may bring us back to a day where it is not a sign of ignorance or stupidity to aspire to become a cop. We’ll see.
