GOP leaders confirm Friday trade vote
Politico ^ | 06/10/2015 | Jake Sherman

House leaders, confident but not yet certain they have the support to pass sweeping trade legislation, said Wednesday they plan to bring the package to a floor vote by the end of this week — even as they rush to resolve a last-minute hangup over how to pay for aid to displaced workers.

The vote to grant President Barack Obama fast-track authority to negotiate a massive Pacific Rim trade deal will be extremely tight by all accounts. Senior aides and lawmakers in GOP leadership are intent on scheduling the vote at the moment they believe they have the votes locked up. That time is now set for Friday, in part to spare supportive lawmakers the possibility of another weekend of attacks by trade foes back in their districts.

“We’re doing very well, we’re close,” Ways and Means Chairman Paul Ryan (R-Wis.), who’s been at the forefront of the GOP effort to round up support, said Tuesday of the current vote count. If Republicans want to bring the trade legislation to the floor Friday, they must decide Wednesday. They took a first step toward a vote early Wednesday morning, when GOP leadership posted the legislation online.

Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) has been holding small meetings with lawmakers in his office as he seeks to maximize Republican “yes” votes — and he huddled late Tuesday with House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) to address some unresolved spending and procedural issues.

If Paul Ryan is happy and Boehner is huddling with Pelosi then you had better know this trade bill is not good for you or any of us.

Watch to see which of our GOP presidential contenders votes for this POS. Then remember it when they come to you as seriously conservative and looking for your vote.

Its pretty bad when you already know they are going to betray you every time. I’ve never seen such a spineless group that works so diligently to destroy America for the sake of lining their own pockets and bowing to The King for approval. Are members of Congress forced to get a behavioral modification / punishment brain implant now or something because it sure seems like it....

"I pity the president after this jackass gets out of office..."

None of his nefarious acts would be possible without the herculean efforts by his Republican co-conspirators in the House and Senate.

It seems Americans will be forced to accept employment at third world salaries if they want to stay employed. But I am not sure how that helps our economy if the majority of Americans can’t afford to buy the products they are importing.

Especially that "one true conservative" guy. The deceiver.

True that. I have no confidence in the GOP. None at all.

In a similar vein, I am not sure how our rising mountain of debt helps our economy. Americans seem to be content with allowing short term policies (crafted purely for political reasons) to destroy our future. But that is where we were are today. We are heading toward a very dark place IMO.

Well put. That’s how it works. I used to think the Republicans were stupid and were being duped by the crafty Democrats. Now its pretty clear the Republicans are willing accomplices.

Agreed. If the country is going to be destroyed I’d rather the Democrats do the deed and keep my fingerprints off of it.

These are pretty ominous statements: “even as they rush to resolve a last-minute hangup over how to pay for aid to displaced workers.”

“Behind the scenes, Boehner and Ryan are consulting with Pelosi, the White House and other senior Democrats to avoid capping Medicare spending to pay for financial assistance to workers who lose their jobs to free trade, aid formally known as Trade Adjustment Assistance. Pelosi won a concession Tuesday night, when Boehner agreed to tweak the financing plan.”

So, despite all the assurances that American workers would benefit, the truth is out.

OMG. I can’t believe either party is beholden to citizens anymore. What is the point of voting?

It’s time ladies and gentlement.

“I pity the president after this jackass gets out of office...”

Nothing will change. This is all part of a plan. The next jackass will do exactly what he’s told to do by the corporations.

We’ve crossed into fascism.

This makes clear the GOP has been bought and paid for by the Chamber of Commerce. As a result they are going to get their heads handed to them in future elections. Any contest between Santa Claus handing out freebies to the 47% and paid turncoats giving crony kickbacks to the 1% is going to be no contest whatsoever.

how to pay for aid to displaced workers...

Isn't that an acknowledgement that this legislation will cost US workers jobs? Who's going to pay for this aid?....the US taxpayer, while corporate profits are enhanced by more cheap labor options.

Then there's the other side of the coin. These "displaced workers" are now-employed, responsible US citizens being added to the idle class. Why would any politician encourage that, when their goal is supposedly to lower the unemployment rate?

This whole scheme is wrong on so many levels.

I just called my representative, Marcia Fudge (ain't gerrymandering great?) and expressed the argument that it can't be claimed that the bill won't displace American workers when there are provisions to provide money for displaced workers.

Get this....Marcia Fudge is totally, unequivocal, adamantly opposed to the bill! And her aide thought that it is a real good argument against it.

Maybe the argument will resonate in other offices.

Meanwhile, I'm Alice and this is Wonderland when Marcia Fudge is one of the strongest supporters of something I so strongly believe! And Ted Cruz backstabs us.

If the GOPe wants the vote on Friday, it will pass.

It is the passing of a secret law offering virtually unlimited power to a renegade, radical, out of control president. We do not know what is in it. It is a SECRET LAW and will remain a secret law.

This is the very last death knell for America. My prediction: American firearms will be banned by treaty. Hate speech laws will make internet-based criticism of Islam or homosexuals an American felony. Carbon taxes will be issued without any congressional or senate involvement. The very few of us that are working will see our taxes go up by 100% and our wages halved.

No way does Obama leave office. Nor would it matter if he did, since we have only one party now.
