In a sensational Shawshank Redemption-style prison break, a pair of cunning convicted murderers used power tools and tunnels to escape an upstate maximum-security penitentiary near the Canadian border.
A massive manhunt was underway Saturday after killers Richard Matt, 48, and David Sweat, 34, were discovered missing from the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, about 25 miles from Canada, officials said.
The inmates made their extraordinary dash to freedom after faking out guards with makeshift dummies made out of hooded sweatshirts to appear as if they were still sleeping inside their cells. And once officials discovered they were gone, they found a note from convicts telling them to "Have a nice day!"
It was an elaborate plot, Gov. Cuomo said after joining law enforcement authorities inside the prison, retracing the prisoners route.

Power tools? LOL, sounds like they had help.
They should look in Zehuataneho
where did they get the necessary tools?
looks like 2 bad asses made fools of the prison authorities...power tools, hows that happen?Should ah just given them a key>
How could they cut through steel for hours with no one hearing? How did they get their hands on prison power tools? How did they know which pipes led outside the prison, and if they could get out of the pipe once outside? They must have had inside help.
They definitely had to have some inside help. I read the article and they even managed to drill through metal.. and somehow knew what route to take to find themselves OUTSIDE the prison. I bet dollars to donuts all the financial records of the employees are being scrutinized.
Clinton correctional?
I’m pretty sure that FOX news reported this morning that one of them is a Mexican national despite the names.
This escape appears to be another example of gross incompetence and/or corruption by the employees of the DEMOCRAT run State of New York.
It is impossible to explain how two criminals could have cut holes in the concrete walls of their cells, cut holes to enter and exit a 3/8” steel sewage pipe, and none of the guards heard a thing.
Like so many things under the DEMOCRAT Crime Ring, the inmates are in charge of the prison.
There was a prison break near my vicinity here in Texas many years ago, where some scumbum had escaped and was believed in the area. What I remember most is how the town citizens reacted, packs of neighbors stationing themselves on street corners with rifles. It was a dark, very foggy night, and I had to drive across town to check on my grandparents. And it was probably one of the most eerie and yet invigorating sights, seeing the silhouettes of packs of people with rifles on the corners of each block, slowly coming into view out of the dark fogginess. Residents taking charge and protecting their own community and their own neighborhoods. Very memorable.
They probably went to the horse track to watch the race.
No way this happened without help and someone turning a blind eye.
And the Guv is AT the Prison....what is it with NY pols???
Probably refers to DeWitt Clinton, Governor of New York, two hundred or so years ago.
Isn’t that nice? They renamed the place in honor of their expected new inmate. I hope they spruced it up for her and found her a cozy little cell.
He was apparently very popular. According to wiki, Clinton Michigan was named after DeWitt Clinton ad was DeWitt Michigan.
“Clinton Correctional”.
Yes.
Probably named for DeWitt Clinton, not half-wit Clinton.
Mr Kitty says the same thing. How could the noise of cutting the pipe not be heard? My Kitty also pointed out how neatly they cut the pipe. Says it shows they weren’t in any great hurry.
My ex-husband’s cousin’s husband used to work in that prison. Sweetest, quietest guy ever. I found it hard to imagine him as a prison guard. Went to the other cousin’s wedding up there back in ‘82 and went past the prison. There really is nothing up there. Maybe the escapees headed into Canada. It’s not very far, even on foot.
