The state Senate on Tuesday approved a hotly debated measure that would allow many immigrants in the state illegally to sign up for special healthcare programs that would offer the same benefits as Medi-Cal.
The action comes just days after lawmakers significantly scaled back the plan, which originally would have offered state-subsidized Medi-Cal to people in the country without authorization.
State Sen. Ricardo Lara (D-Bell Gardens) said his proposal provides what we can realistically achieve now for the estimated 2 million people in the state illegally.
We are talking about our friends. We are talking about our neighbors and our families who are denied basic healthcare in the richest state of this union, Lara told his colleagues.
The bill would allow up to 240,000 minors to sign up for Medi-Cal and allow some low-income adults to sign up for a separate program that provides the same services.

It's not like California will ever have to PAY for it, right? They'll just "Borrow" the money, sticking some poor citizen schmuck with the bill, when the eventual State Bankruptcy comes.
Hey, why not? When the ship’s going down, why not load a bit more on to get it to sink faster.
and then the other states bail their sorry ass out..
They better go tits up before cruz takes control. I don’t think he’d write the check.
But..But..But Senor Lara, you told us back in 1995 that “a State cannot make de eeemegration law!” when we specifically and overwhelmingly made this against the law with Prop 187.
Gosh, what changed?!
Thankfully we have money trees to help pay for everything!
They’ll get around to spending our money on health care for prospective undocumented immigrants.
Cruz wants to legalize their status; he just does not want to give them a path to citizenship. I am sure they will be eligible for Medicare, Medicaid, and Obamacare.
ViVa LA ReconQuistaaaaa!!!!!!
“We are talking about our friends. We are talking about our neighbors and our families who are denied basic healthcare in the richest state of this union, Lara told his colleagues.”
Soon to be the poorest state in the union thanks to legislation like this.
All other states in the union with illegal immigrants, should furnish them with one way bus tickets to california.
BTW What are all the illegals supposed to do when the farming work and landscaping work go the way of the dinosaur until Jerry Brownlawn’s drought is over? That's right!! FREE STUFF and ‘assistance’ on the back's of legal taxpaying citizens.
The pile of money Kalipornia has is bottomless....
Lara and the others supporters of this health benefits bill are fools. Re the illegals “who are denied basic healthcare in the richest state of this union”.
They are here ILLEGALLY. They are not being “denied” anything that they do not deserve. Besides, hospitals have to serve them, even if they cannot pay. Charities help them, but not us working citizens.
Re “water use”. Do these people say that illegals don’t take showers, baths or use toilets? (ok. I’ve been in Latin America - toilets are often non-existent there so bus-stop areas are fair game).
What a way to insult the very people you are championing. Typical liberal/leftist dyslexic thinking.
If I was a liberal Democrat in 2015, I’d be laughing and crapping on everyone too. :)
“Cruz wants to legalize their status.”
once their status is legalized the liberals will start arguing that they deserve full citizenship, and then it will be only a matter of time before they get it.
Cruz is smart enough to know this.
therefore, he is a fake conservative.
and the people who have dutifully paid in with taxes all these years will again be asked for more money and take fewer services in return....
Has Cruz come out and said that he wants to make them legal permanent residents? As legal permanent residents (i.e. with green card), they're pretty much citizens in everything but name. The only thing they aren't eligible for is voting or serving on juries.
