There was recently a thread on FR discussing the fact that gargantuan aircraft carriers were great as a projection of force against weaker nations but not so useful against serious armies such as the US, Russia, and China. I don’t remember all the specifics but the gist was their size, and limited maneuverability made them easy targets for modern missiles.

Russians just like to make such announcements to keep their people happy and rarely actually build anything. Helps that the people seem to have a very bad memory and never wonder why these announced megaprojects never go anywhere.
