Lorenzo Ayala saved more than $16,000 to buy tractor parts while on a road trip to Montana to visit a woman he met online, but he ended up unwittingly contributing it to the state's first K-9 unit.
Ayala forfeited his wad of cash after a state trooper became suspicious that the California farmer's generous amount of cologne, cluttered car and disputed criminal history were signs of drug trafficking.
Ayala, of Palo Alto, was never charged with a crime but Montana kept his money.
This year, Montana became the fourth state to overhaul what activists call "policing for profit." Beginning July 1, officers must store suspects' assets, such as the cash Ayala had in his trunk, until the owner is convicted of a crime involving that property.

I have an old pickup with trash in it...and $7.56 in my pocket.
Now, GIVE HIM BACK HIS MONEY THAT YOU STOLE UNDER COVER OF LAW!!!!!!!
Congress ought to pass legislation that no person shall be derived of life, liberty, or property without due process.
Fk that.
The 4th amendment should rule their actions.
lol That’s hilarious.
I don’t know about that. Does that really seem reasonable?
That's crazy talk. Give the people that and the next thing they're going to want is free speech.
what a quaint idea. We've gone so far into left field that some agencies feel they are entitled to do what ever they can get away with. Our only remedy is to sue them if they will allow it, or vote them out of office next election.
Yeah, they could even be cute and call em the 4th, 5th and 8th amendment.
For guidance they could refer to something codified by the state of Virginia in 1776 and even find some influence in an English document, circa 1215, called The Magna Carta...
That would never be acceptable.
“color of law”.
And yes, I totally agree with you. GIVE IT BACK MONTANA!
Not many farms in Palo Alto.
So it was OK for the cops to steal his cash??
This is nothing more than the boys in blue profiting from these seizures from citizens who have not been convicted of any crime...or charged with any crime. This is CORRUPTION — NOTHING LESS.
For all the good Ronald Reagan was, this was his worst idea with the best of intentions.

Further proving his very own point that small government is best, as even the gipper made bad decisions.
Since people are Fallible, then you must always limit the people in power from interfering in other people’s lives.
Well played...
....but I doubt they’d pass that anyway.
“Not many farms in Palo Alto.”
A few points here:
~Stanford University is commonly referred to as
“the farm”
~The Santa Clara Valley was one of the richest
agricultural areas on the continent before it
was mostly paved over.
~If you look hard you can still find small
parcels where products like strawberries are
grown in the area.
~Some ‘gentlemen farmers’ live in town and commute
to their small farms in more rural areas.
Just tear up the constitution; it don’t mean squat anymore.
