South Korean man arrested for slaughtering 600 cats

BUSAN, South Korea, May 21 (UPI) -- A South Korean man was arrested for slaughtering 600 stray cats and selling the meat for medicinal soups.

The man, identified only by the surname Jeong, was taken into custody in May for violating South Korea's animal protection laws, reported Yonhap on Thursday.

Jeong, who is in his 50s, said he sold the meat to traditional Korean health care centers – claiming the meat could be used in soups to treat arthritis.

South Korea's Chosun TV reported Jeong employed a brutal method of butchering the cats.

After trapping the cat, he would throw the live cat into boiling water, pull out the dead cat's fur then store the gutted meat in vinyl packages – in an industrial-sized refrigerator.

When police raided his secluded farmhouse, they found a trash bin stuffed with animal intestines and organs. Inside a refrigerator were packages of unidentifiable meat.

Jeong had been dealing in cat meat since February 2014, north Busan police said.

He would make as much as $13.72 per cat meat pack, and earned a total of $8,230.14 in revenue before his arrest on May 8.

Jeong said he was destitute and performing different kinds of menial labor before he found his way into his illegal business.

Busan police said they managed to rescue 18 cats trapped inside boxes.

Due to a legal loophole, the health care centers in question will not be charged for acquiring the cat meat.

after being stuck in the house pretty much for five years after a head injury, the one thing that kept my sanity was my little cat buddy, spaghetti. (yes, I’m Italian).
if someone hurt my pal, they would be in SO MUCH pain.

So cat meat is illegal but not dog meat.

I saw some videos unfortunately about 10 years ago on the internet about what they do to dogs over there, especially China. I can’t even describe it, I had nightmares for a week. This is the is the kind of people we want over here spreading some of that “cultural diversity”? Hell no.

Your picture says what I was thinking. My family and I went to a chinese restaurnt once and ordered several dishes advertised as including chicken. It did not taste like chicken. We figured it was cats or rats or something else illegal to serve.

Beware of the “chicken” at some Chinese restaurants.

The restaurant was not open long.

Have you ever seen the show, “The Mother’s In-Law”? They had a dog named Lasagna.

The big surprise for me is that this is now illegal in South Korea. Aren’t cats and dogs still a staple in nearby communist countries throughout the region? My sister-in-law once confronted an older Korean lady who had a burlap bag full of cats near military housing at a base she was stationed at in the United States. Half a dozen military family pets that had been destined for a big pot went scrambling away when Master Sergeant Lieber took the bag from the lady and opened it. A heated discussion followed.

It is becoming more and more rare over there, mostly old people. It is a holdover from when South Korea was a dirt poor country.

We have a good friend from Vietnam who visits her relatives every year. She says the first thing that she notices every time she goes back is the complete lack of birds. Pretty much every bird that has the misfortune to visit is caught and eaten by the locals. Vietnam thanks to their fine “socialist” government is still basically dirt poor.

It is amazing how few people realize that when Japan left Korea the north was the prosperous (comparatively speaking) industrialized section. The south was agricultural and much less prosperous.

In 1950 South Korea had the same per capita GDP (about $850, today’s dollars) as Ivory Coast.

SK today: $26,000

IC today: $1528

I haven’t thought of that show in years. Kay Ballard, Eve Arden and about everybody on it has passed away. It was a sunday night show and it was fun.

An eye for an eye. Boiling would be the least of their worries.
