Good question, but that is not what he’s being charged with. Maybe that’s next and will come out in discovery. Real estate, or so I’ve read...........

He entered Congress in 1987 with a net worth of no more than $270,000 and then exited worth somewhere between $4 million and $17 million, according to congressional disclosure documents." The new American formula for making a fortune.

The Bank Secrecy Act of 1970 (or BSA, or otherwise known as the Currency and Foreign Transactions Reporting Act) requires financial institutions in the United States to assist U.S. government agencies to detect and prevent money laundering. Specifically, the act requires financial institutions to keep records of cash purchases of negotiable instruments, and file reports of cash purchases of these negotiable instruments of more than $10,000 (daily aggregate amount), and to report suspicious activity that might signify money laundering, tax evasion, or other criminal activities.

It's a legacy from the early years of the drug war. Hastert was a big time supporter, so he is being hoist on his own petard.

to agree to pay someone 3.5 Million to keep quiet tells you whatever it was, would have destroyed him
I have made similar comments. But, it seems the timeline is screwy: He negotiated with the guy in 2010 and began payments shortly after.
Why then? He was no longer in public life. Why not decades ago when exposure could have impacted Hastert's political career?
There is something that does not sound right with the story. Also, the 'leaked' details seem cloudy about who Hastert was actually paying the money to: the kid (now grown), or to a recipient knowledgeable of the incident(s) but not necessarily the participant.
One 'leak' said the officials knew of another individual involved in similar activity but the officials declined to include that in this indictment.
We will have to wait for more leaks. lol.

Per various thread posts and linked articles, Hastert entered Congress with a net worth of about $270k. When he left Congress he had a net worth of between $4 and $17 million.
Must be investing a lot of his Congressional salary (probably averaged around $150k per year) in cattle futures.

you would think intent should be factored in but its not. This needs be a 2 step law. Evading reporting limits in the execution of an illegal act. Not just taking out cash in a manner the govt doesn’t approve of.

No wonder they could not do much about Clinton. The GOP is just as disgusting.

Now we are seeing why the Republicans are so weak. They are being blackmailed.

Note: this topic is from 05-29-2015. The recent revival of this as a "news" story has *nothing to do with* the current election campaign, *I'm sure of it.* Thanks Red Badger.
