Shots are believed to have been fired after as many as six people entered the Fort Benning Army base without authorization on Thursday afternoon.

The base is located in Columbus, Georgia, near the Alabama line. Fort Benning police are searching for three to five males who may be armed and are believed to be hiding in the woods on the base, according to a Facebook post from Fort Benning.

One person who discharged a firearm has been taken into custody, the Facebook post said.

The men entered the base in two vehicles, police said. Weapons were recovered from both vehicles.

Base personnel have been urged to remain indoors until the search is concluded.

The “teeth” did stop the cars, but it sounds like the occupants escaped and are on the loose.

Need help with Varmits at night? You need to call these guys, who incidentally all used to be based at Ft. Benning.

If they ran into the woods, Benning has helicopters equipped with infrared viewers, so at night these guys would be obvious in a forest.

Depends a lot on the foliage. Now helicopters combined with dogs, and you can really have some fun. They make a good team. Helicopters sow down movement, even when they can’t see the suspect. That makes it easier for the dog to catch up.

I remember a story from Fort Leonard Wood, which also has substantial forest.

A gang of armed robbers held up one of their end of the month pay officers who was distributing cash. The robbers fled in a 4x4, and when pursued by Military Police sedans drove cross country where the sedans could follow and got away.

They made only one mistake. Trying to do it again the following month.

This time, no sedans followed, but when they drove into the woods, suddenly two attack helicopters appeared, and used their miniguns on the 4x4 liberally. Then then MPs went in on foot with dogs, to pick up any cash fluttering around. One of them reported that the 4x4 and its occupants seemed to have been reduced to chunks a few inches wide.
